South-west Western Australia
Names such as the South West or South West corner, when used to refer to a specific area of Western Australia, denote a region that has been defined in several different ways. Such names now usually refer to areas immediately south of the Perth metropolitan region and west of the Wheatbelt. Its narrowest and most specific usage is in reference to the official, government-designated South West region. However, broader usages may include the entire south-western quarter of Australia. South West Land Division
The South West Land Division is one of five Land Divisions of Western Australia, a part of the cadastral divisions of Western Australia. It includes the cities of Perth, Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Geraldton, and Mandurah. It also includes the regions of South West, Great Southern, Peel, most of the Wheatbelt, and the coastal areas of the Mid West. The Perth metropolitan region or the Perth metropolitan area is the administrative area and geographical extent of the Western Australian capital city of Perth and its conurbation. Wheatbelt (Western Australia)
The Wheatbelt is one of nine regions of Western Australia defined as administrative areas for the state's regional development, and a vernacular term for the area converted to agriculture during colonisation. It partially surrounds the Perth metropolitan area, extending north from Perth to the Mid West region, and east to the Goldfields–Esperance region. It is bordered to the south by the South West and Great Southern regions, and to the west by the Indian Ocean, the Perth metropolitan area, and the Peel region. South West Region (Western Australia)
The South West Region is a multi-member electoral region of the Western Australian Legislative Council the South West, Peel and part of the Great Southern regions of the state. It was created by the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'', and became effective on 22 May 1989 with seven members who had been elected at the 1989 state election three months earlier. At the 2008 election, it was reduced to six members. The region includes the cities of Albany, Bunbury and Mandurah. Legislation to abolish the region, along with all other Western Australian Electoral Regions was passed in November 2021, with the 2025 state election to use a single state-wide electorate of 37 members. Southwest Australia
Southwest Australia is a biogeographic region in Western Australia. It includes the Mediterranean-climate area of southwestern Australia, which is home to a diverse and distinctive flora and fauna. The region is also known as the Southwest Australia Global Diversity Hotspot, as well as Kwongan. Geography The region includes the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub ecoregions of Western Australia. The region covers 356,717 km2, consisting of a broad coastal plain 20-120 kilometres wide, transitioning to gently undulating uplands made up of weathered granite, gneiss and laterite. South West Drainage Division
The south-west corner drainage region of Western Australia is one of only two temperate and relatively fertile parts of mainland Australia. It covers about , or a little less than 2% of the continent. For comparison, this is about the same size as North Carolina or a little larger than England. The landscape is generally flat and sandy but there are several major features, in particular the Stirling Range near Albany, which reaches at its highest point, and the Darling Scarp. The climate is temperate Mediterranean. Summers are warm to hot and dry, winters are cool and wet. South West Seismic Zone
The South West Seismic Zone (also identified as SWSZ) is a major intraplate earthquake province located in the south west of Western Australia. It was known earlier as the ''Yandanooka – Cape Riche Lineament'', corresponds to the physiographic boundary known as the ''Meckering Line'', and also the junction between Swanland and Salinaland. The zone exists within an Archaean Shield structure called the Yilgarn Block. The identified geological subdivisions within this Precambrian structure do not show an obvious relation to the seismicity. The zone represents a significant seismic hazard to Perth. More than six thousand earthquakes have occurred in the SWSZ in the years 1968 – 2002. Meckering, Cadoux and Burakin earthquakes originated in the SWSZ.
