Slit-scan
The slit-scan photography technique is a photographic and cinematographic process where a moveable slide, into which a slit has been cut, is inserted between the camera and the subject to be photographed. More generally, "slit-scan photography" refers to cameras that use a slit, which is particularly used in scanning cameras in panoramic photography. This has numerous applications. Strip Photography
Strip photography, or slit photography, is a photographic technique of capturing a two-dimensional image as a sequence of one-dimensional images over time, in contrast to a normal photo which is a single two-dimensional image (the full field) at one point in time. A moving scene is recorded, over a period of time, using a camera that observes a narrow strip rather than the full field. If the subject is moving through this observed strip at constant speed, they will appear in the finished photo as a visible object. Stationary objects, like the background, will be the same the whole way across the photo and appear as stripes along the time axis; see examples on this page. The image can be understood as a collection of thin vertical or horizontal strips patched together, hence the name. Bernard Lodge
Bernard Lodge (born 1933) is a British graphic designer. He worked for the BBC from 1959 to 1977 before launching a freelance career. He has been described by the Open University as a pioneer of graphic design in television. Lodge attended the Royal College of Art and joined the BBC graphics department. He is known for his work on the science-fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', for which he designed the first four series logos. He also designed and engineered the first five title sequences. These include the 'Optical feedback, howlaround' versions and the 'slit-scan photography, slit-scan' time tunnel versions. In 1974, Lodge won a Royal Television Society Award for Best Graphics, becoming one of the first people involved in ''Doctor Who'' to win an award for his work. John Hales Whitney, Sr. (April 8, 1917September 22, 1995) was an American animator, composer and inventor, widely considered to be one of the fathers of computer animation. Life Whitney was born in Pasadena, California and attended Pomona College. He is a descendant of the Whitney family through his father's direct line. His first works in film were 8 mm movies of a lunar eclipse which he made using a home-made telescope. In 1937-38 he spent a year in Paris, studying twelve-tone composition under René Leibowitz.
