Common Name
In biology, a common name of a taxon or organism (also known as a vernacular name, English name, colloquial name, country name, popular name, or farmer's name) is a name that is based on the normal language of everyday life; and is often contrasted with the scientific name for the same organism, which is Latinized. A common name is sometimes frequently used, but that is not always the case. In chemistry, IUPAC defines a common name as one that, although it unambiguously defines a chemical, does not follow the current systematic naming convention, such as acetone, systematically 2-propanone, while a vernacular name describes one used in a lab, trade or industry that does not unambiguously describe a single chemical, such as copper sulfate, which may refer to either copper(I) sulfate or copper(II) sulfate. Sometimes common names are created by authorities on one particular subject, in an attempt to make it possible for members of the general public (including such interested par ...

Blicca Bjoerkna
''Blicca bjoerkna'', alternatively called the white bream or the silver bream, is a European species of freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae. Distribution ''Blicca bjoerkna'' is distributed across most of Europe and in adjacent Western Asia. The natural distribution, though, excludes peripheral areas such as northern Sweden, northern Finland and Norway, and most parts of the British Isles (except Southern England), as well as the Iberian and Italian peninsulas. Introduced populations occur also in Spain and Italy, for instance. The Asian distribution is in the Caspian Sea and Aral Sea basins and in Anatolian Black Sea drainages. Description Small silver bream are very similar in overall appearance to the immature common, or bronze bream, ''Abramis brama'', but can be distinguished by their larger scales. Counting the scale rows from the front of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and including the lateral line scale, is the most reliable first step in determining the speci ...

Acanthopagrus Australis
''Acanthopagrus australis'', the yellowfin bream, also known as sea bream, surf bream, silver bream or eastern black bream, is a species of marine and freshwater fish of the porgy family, Sparidae. It is a deep-bodied fish, occasionally confused with ''Acanthopagrus butcheri'' (black bream), but is generally distinguished by its yellowish ventral and anal fins. It is a popular target for recreational fishermen due to its capacity to fight well above its weight coupled with its table quality. Taxonomy ''A. australis'' is one of 20 species in the genus ''Acanthopagrus'', part of the porgy family Sparidae. The species was first mentioned in scientific literature by Richard Owen in an 1853 work on skeletal material held by the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Although he named it ''Chrysophrys australis'', it was insufficiently described and hence designated a ''nomen nudum''. German-British naturalist Albert Günther formally described the surf bream in 1859 using ...

Acanthopagrus Berda
''Acanthopagrus berda'', the goldsilk seabream, sly bream or picnic seabream, among other names, is a marine fish in the family Sparidae native to the Indian Ocean The Indian Ocean is the third-largest of the world's five oceanic divisions, covering or ~19.8% of the water on Earth's surface. It is bounded by Asia to the north, Africa to the west and Australia to the east. To the south it is bounded by th .... Feeding activity intensifies in the summer and is related to temperature and the maximal abundance of benthic organisms. Their diet primarily consists of barnacles, crabs, and oysters, while the secondary food items consist of shrimp, clam and mussels, although the species' diet consists of a wide variety ranging from feeding on teleost, worms, molluscs, small fishes, and plant material. Distribution The goldsilk seabream is found in Indian Ocean. It has been found along the coasts of South Africa, Mozambique, India and in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, as well as in ...

Acanthopagrus Butcheri
''Acanthopagrus butcheri'', the black bream but also commonly known as the southern black bream, southern bream and blue-nosed bream, is a species of marine and freshwater fish of the porgy family, Sparidae. It is a deep-bodied fish, occasionally confused with other similar species that occur within its range, but is generally distinguished from these species by a lack of yellow ventral and anal fins. Southern black bream are endemic to Australia, inhabiting the southern coast from Shark Bay in Western Australia to Ulladulla, New South Wales, as well as Tasmania. The species is primarily an inhabitant of estuaries and coastal lakes, rarely entering the ocean, as it cannot complete its life cycle in a fully marine environment. During the breeding season, the species is known to penetrate into the upper reaches of rivers to spawn, causing an influx of juveniles in the estuaries a few months later. Black bream are opportunistic predators, consuming a wide range of crustaceans, moll ...

Bidyanus Bidyanus
The silver perch (''Bidyanus bidyanus'') is a medium-sized freshwater fish of the family Terapontidae endemic to the Murray-Darling river system in south-eastern Australia. Taxonomy The silver perch's scientific name comes from an aboriginal name for the species – ''bidyan'' – recorded by Major Mitchell on the Barwon River on his 1832 expedition. (Mitchell's original scientific name for the species was ''Cernua Bidyana''.) Silver perch are not a "true" perch of the genus ''Perca'', but are instead a member of Terapontidae or 'grunter' family. They are the largest member of the Terapontidae, capable of growing in excess of and close to , but today wild river specimens are typically and . The silver perch is the only major representative of the family Terapontidae in the southern Murray-Darling system, compared to northern tropical systems where terapontid species are common. Another small terapontid, the spangled perch (''Leiopotherapon unicolor''), does occur sporadic ...

Bidyanus Welchi
''Bidyanus welchi'', commonly known as Welch's grunter, black bream, or silver bream, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish from the family Terapontidae native to Australia. Description ''Bidyanus welchi'' has an elongate, oblong to ovate, slender, slightly compressed body. The back and underparts have evenly arched profiles with the dorsal profile being straight from the snout to the back of the head and it then becomes convex from there tp the start of the dorsal fin. The profile of the lower edge of the body is evenly arched to pelvic fin and is the then straight as far as the anus. The dorsal fin is continuous with the spiny part arched and containing 12 spines, the first of which is the shortest and the 5th or 6th being the longest; they decrease in height until the last one which is still longer than the longest dorsal soft rays. There are 11–12 soft rays in the posterior part of the dorsal fin. The anal fin has three spines and eight to nine soft rays. The caudal fi ...

Pseudocaranx Dentex
The white trevally (''Pseudocaranx dentex''), also known as striped jack,) is a jack of the family Carangidae widespread in tropical and warm temperate areas between 40°N and 47°S, in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. It has a deep body and a greenish colour with metallic overtones and a dark spot above the gills. The fins are yellow. Trevally are strong fighters and the flesh is good to eat if a little dry. It is often used as cut bait. Its maximum size is about 120 cm. In New Zealand, this trevally is known by the Māori as ''araara'', and is generally confined to waters north of Cook Strait, although it sometimes reaches as far south as Otago in the summer. Nemadactylus Macropterus
''Nemadactylus macropterus'', the tarakihi, jackass morwong or deep sea perch, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, traditionally regarded as belonging to the family Cheilodactylidae, the members of which are commonly known as morwongs. It is found in the south western Pacific Ocean, in Australia and New Zealand. Although there are records from the southern Indian Ocean and southwestern Atlantic, these may be due to misidentifications of similar species. Taxonomy ''Nemadactylus macropterus'' was first formally described in 1801 as ''Cichla macroptera'' by the German naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster with the type locality given as New Zealand. In 1839 Sir John Richardson described a new species ''Nemadactylus concinnus'' from Tasmania he created the monotypic genus ''Nemadactylus'' for it, ''N. concinnus'' was later considered to be a synonym of Forster's ''C. macroptera'', making this species the type species of the genus ''Nemadactylus'' as Richardson's N. concinnus. ...

Bream
Bream ( ) are species of freshwater and marine fish belonging to a variety of genera including ''Abramis'' (e.g., ''A. brama'', the common bream), ''Acanthopagrus'', '' Argyrops'', ''Blicca'', '' Brama'', ''Chilotilapia'', '' Etelis'', ''Lepomis'', ''Gymnocranius'', '' Lethrinus'', ''Nemipterus'', ''Pharyngochromis'', ''Rhabdosargus'', ''Scolopsis'', or ''Serranochromis''. Although species from all of these genera are called "bream", the term does not imply a degree of relatedness between them. Fish termed "bream" tend to be narrow, deep-bodied species. The name is a derivation of the Middle English word ''breme'', of Old French origin. The term sea bream is sometimes used for gilt-head bream (''Sparus aurata''), (''orata'' in Italy, ''dorada'' in Spain) or porgies (both family Sparidae) or pomfrets (family Bramidae) . See also * Porgie fishing * Bluegill The bluegill (''Lepomis macrochirus''), sometimes referred to as "bream", "brim", "sunny", or "copper nose" as is c ...

Sparidae
The Sparidae are a family of fish in the order Perciformes, commonly called sea breams and porgies. The sheepshead, scup, and red seabream are species in this family. Most sparids are deep-bodied compressed fish with a small mouth separated by a broad space from the eye, a single dorsal fin with strong spines and soft rays, a short anal fin, long pointed pectoral fins and rather large firmly attached scales. They are found in shallow temperate and tropical waters and are bottom-dwelling carnivores. There are hermaphrodites in the Sparidae. Protogyny and protandry appear sporadically through this lineage of fish. Simultaneous hermaphrodites and bi-directional hermaphrodites do not appear as much since Sparidae are found in shallower waters. Species of fish that express a hermaphroditic condition usually "lack a genetic hardwire", therefore ecological factors play a role in sex determination. Most species possess grinding, molar-like teeth. Eating the head is known to cause hallu ...
