In the game of Go, shape describes the positional qualities of a group of stones. Descriptions of shapes in go revolve around how well a group creates or removes life and territory. ''Good shape'' can refer to the efficient use of stones in outlining territory, the strength of a group in a prospective fight, or making eye shapes so that a group may live. ''Bad shapes'' are inefficient in outlining territory and are heavy. Heavy groups cannot easily make eye shapes and are therefore good targets for attack. Understanding and recognizing the difference between good shape and bad is an essential step in becoming a stronger player. Shape is not a rule; the surrounding position must always be taken into account. While it is useful for beginners to learn the common good and bad shapes presented here, sometimes a usually bad shape can be the best shape to play locally. Masaki Takemiya
is a professional Go player. Biography Masaki Takemiya was born in Japan. He became one of the many disciples of the Minoru Kitani school. His rise to fame began when he was only 15 years old. He earned the nickname "9 dan killer" because he won several games against top rated players. His famous "cosmic style" of Go would become popular among fans. It focused on large moyo in the center of the board. He's known as keeping a consistent record of winning titles. The longest period in which he did not hold a title has only been 4 years. He closed off 2005 with an impressive win of 16 straight games, which was stopped by Omori Yasushi in the qualifiers for the 3rd World Oza. Outside of Go, Takemiya also won the biggest Japanese backgammon tournament, the 12th Saint of the Board title, by beating the former holder, Abe Akiko. Go (board Game)
Go is an abstract strategy board game for two players in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago and is believed to be the oldest board game continuously played to the present day. A 2016 survey by the International Go Federation's 75 member nations found that there are over 46 million people worldwide who know how to play Go and over 20 million current players, the majority of whom live in East Asia. The playing pieces are called stones. One player uses the white stones and the other, black. The players take turns placing the stones on the vacant intersections (''points'') of a board. Richard Bozulich
Richard Bozulich (born 1936) is an American author, publisher of Go books in English and college math instructor. He co-founded the Ishi Press. He has worked with several Japanese professional players. He had a regular go column in The Daily Yomiuri, which at that time was Japan's largest English-language newspaper. He lives in Chigasaki, Japan. In 2012 Bozulich was a candidate for Comptroller of New York City for the War Veterans Party. From university Bozulich was born in Los Angeles, California. From 1955 to 1956, he attended UCLA, studying the foundations of mathematics in the philosophy department under Richard Montague. Eventually he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966 with a BA in mathematics. is a Japanese term in the game of Go that refers to capturing a single stone, resulting in a diamond shape. Empty Triangle
In the game of Go, the empty triangle is the most fundamental example of the concept of bad shape. Three stones of one color form an empty triangle when they are placed in a triangle arrangement that fits in a 2×2 square, and when one intersection is left empty. If the triangle is ''filled'' by a stone of the opponent's at the fourth point of the 2×2, the shape is neutral – not necessarily good or bad. The deficiencies of the empty triangle are twofold. Three stones in a straight line have eight liberties, while in an empty triangle they have only seven. This can mean the difference between success and failure in a life-and-death struggle. Ladder (Go)
In the game of Go, a ,() is a basic sequence of moves in which an attacker pursues a group in atari in a zig-zag pattern across the board. If there are no intervening stones, the group will hit the edge of the board and be captured.
