Scyllo-Inositol
''scyllo''-Inositol is one of the stereoisomers of inositol. It is also known as scyllitol, cocositol, quercinitol, and 1,3,5/2,4,6-hexahydroxycyclohexane. ''scyllo''-Inositol is a naturally occurring plant sugar alcohol found most abundantly in the coconut palm. Biological effects Researchers at the University of Toronto have found that ''scyllo''-inositol can block the development of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques in the brains of transgenic mice. ''scyllo''-Inositol also reversed memory deficits, reduced the formation of Aβ plaques, and alleviated other symptoms that are associated with the accumulation of Aβ proteins in these mice. Researchers at the Harvard Medical School-affiliated McLean Hospital identified that chronic users of anabolic steroids had statistically significantly lower levels of brain scyllo-inositol levels as compared to non-users. Fast track is a designation by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of an investigational drug for expedited review to facilitate development of drugs that treat a serious or life-threatening condition and fill an unmet medical need. FDA will review the request and attempt to make a decision within sixty days. DCI accelerates the dephosphorylation of glycogen synthase and pyruvate dehydrogenase, rate limiting enzymes of non-oxidative and oxidative glucose disposal. DCI may act to bypass defective normal epimerization of ''myo''-inositol to DCI associated with insulin resistance and at least partially restore insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal.
