Scally (also spelled Skelly or Skally) and "Ni Sceallaígh” in Irish and “Ni Scalaí” in modern Irish is a surname of Irish origin. Origins The surname Scally is an anglicized version of the Gaelic "Mac Scalaíghe ", which means "Son of the Storyteller". It was first found in County Westmeath. The variations of the name were formed when church officials spelled the names as they were pronounced, which caused many different spellings of the surname. Variations The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Mac Scalaíghe, which was dated around 1100 by the Ancient Records of Westmeath during the reign of High Kings of Ireland. Gabriel John Scally FFPHM (born September 1954) is an Irish public health physician and a former regional director of public health (RDPH) for the south west of England. He is a visiting professor of public health at the University of Bristol and is a member of the Independent SAGE group, formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He is also chair of the trustees of the Soil Association. Previously he was professor of public health and planning, and director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Healthy Urban Environments, both at the University of the West of England (UWE). He was president of the section of epidemiology and public health of the Royal Society of Medicine, a position he took in 2017. Early life and education Caroline Scally was born Caroline Stein on 29 October 1886 at 7 Corrig Avenue in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin.Snoddy, T. (2002). Dictionary of Irish artists: 20th Century. Artwork Scally's work is figurative and psychological, much of it deals with elevating biology over religion and with issues of nature and ecology. Neil Scally (born 14 August 1978, in Paisley) is a Scottish football coach and former player. Scally played for Ayr United, Dumbarton, Falkirk and Queen of the South. Career Scally started his playing career with Ayr United and then Dumbarton. Scally then played for Falkirk, for who he scored the equalising goal in the 2004 Scottish Challenge Cup Final win against Ross County. That same season Scally and Falkirk earned promotion to the Scottish Premier League as First Division champions. He left on a free transfer from Falkirk in the summer of 2006.
