''Startup.com'' is a 2001 American documentary film directed by Jehane Noujaim and Chris Hegedus. D.A. Pennebaker served as a producer on the film. It follows the dot-com start-up govWorks.com, which raised $60 million in funding from Hearst Interactive Media, KKR, the New York Investment Fund, and Sapient. The startup did not survive, but it became a reference for lessons learned, as it was the subject of a 2001 documentary that follows govWorks founders Kaleil Isaza Tuzman and Tom Herman from 1999 to 2000, as the Internet bubble was bursting. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2001. It was released on May 11, 2001, by Artisan Entertainment. Production The film was produced by D.A. Kaleil Isaza Tuzman
Kaleil Isaza Tuzman is a former entrepreneur associated with digital media, who spent more than 20 years in that industry before being convicted of multiple counts of fraud in 2017. Tuzman started his career at Goldman Sachs, was co-founder of GovWorks.com (the subject of the 2001 documentary ''Startup.com'', which followed the company from its founding to its bankruptcy), served as President of JumpTV, and then as chief executive officer and chairman of KIT Digital, Inc. On September 7, 2015, he was arrested in Colombia and held in a Bogotá prison until being extradited to the United States to face charges of fraud and market manipulation in connection with the defrauding of investors in KIT Digital and two investment funds. govWorks Inc. was a dot-com company that was founded in 1998 by Kaleil Isaza Tuzman, Tom Herman and Chieh Cheung. It went bankrupt when the dot-com bubble burst in 2000. govWorks's rise and fall is documented in the 2001 documentary ''Startup.com''. The firm, originally known as Public Data Systems, produced software to help government clients track contracts and purchasing functions. As the Internet boom accelerated, the company transitioned toward becoming an Internet web portal. During the company's existence, cities such as Grand Island, New York, showed interest in using its services. A survey was also conducted by ''The Economist'' which concluded that people preferred to pay fees owed to the government over the Internet due to its convenience. Jehane Noujaim ( ar, جيهان نجيم, ) (born May 17, 1974) is an Academy Award nominated American documentary film director best known for her films ''Control Room'', '' Startup.com'', '' Pangea Day'' and '' The Square.'' In 2019, she co-directed ''The Great Hack'' with Karim Amer. Background Noujaim was born to a Lebanese father and an American mother who was born in Connecticut. She was raised in Kuwait and Cairo and moved to Boston by the age of 10, in 1984. She attended Milton Academy. Chris Hegedus (born April 23, 1952) is an American documentary filmmaker. She and her husband, filmmaker D. A. Pennebaker, founded the company Pennebaker Hegedus Films. Hegedus was nominated for an Academy Award for ''The War Room'', a behind-the-scenes film about President Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign. The film also won the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures prize for Best Documentary. In 2001, she was awarded the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for ''Startup.com''. The film is a boom-bust story of two young internet entrepreneurs, co-produced with Jehane Noujaim.
