Stalwart (politics)
The Stalwarts were a faction of the Republican Party that existed briefly in the United States during and after Reconstruction and the Gilded Age during the 1870s and 1880s. Led by U.S. Senator Roscoe Conkling—also known as "Lord Roscoe"—Stalwarts were sometimes called ''Conklingites''. Other notable Stalwarts included Benjamin Wade, Charles J. Folger, George C. Gorham, Chester A. Arthur, Thomas C. Platt, and Leonidas C. Houk. The faction favored Ulysses S. Grant, the eighteenth President of the United States (1869–1877), running for a third term in the 1880 United States presidential election. The designation of "Stalwart" to describe the faction was coined by James G. Blaine, who would later lead the rival "Half-Breed" faction during the Garfield administration. Alvis Stalwart
The Stalwart, formally classified by the British Army as Truck, High Mobility Load Carrier (HMLC), 5 Ton, 6 x 6, Alvis/Stalwart and informally known by servicemen as the Stolly, and by former RCT as the Stally, is a highly mobile amphibious military truck. Built by Alvis Cars between 1963 and 1971, these vehicles served with the British Army from 1964 until 1993. History Alvis had great success with the FV603 Saracen armoured personnel carrier, being produced from 1952. The Saracen having permanent 6 wheel drive, and independent parallel wishbone links and torsion bar suspension on each wheel station. Alvis then used the same suspension and drive methods to develop the FV601 Saladin armoured car, and the Salamander airfield crash tender. Following the success of those vehicles, Alvis then decided to start a private venture of an off-road truck, capable of carrying 5 tons and being highly mobile. RSS ''Stalwart'' (72) is the fifth ship of the ''Formidable''-class stealth frigate of the Republic of Singapore Navy. Construction and career RSS ''Stalwart'' was built by ST Marine Engineering company in Singapore in the late 2000s. ''Stalwart'' was commissioned on 16 January 2009. Exercise Malabar 2007 RSS ''Formidable'' participated in Exercise Malabar 07–2 in September 2007, a Theater Security Cooperation engagement involving the navies of the United States, India, Australia, Japan and Singapore. ''Ulmus'' 'Morton Stalwart' (selling name ), is a Morton Arboretum hybrid cultivar arising from a controlled crossing of with the hybrid of a Field Elm ''U. minor'' from eastern Russia and a Siberian Elm ''U. pumila''. Tested in the US National Elm Trial coordinated by Colorado State University, averaged a survival rate of 85% after 10 years.
