Sliver (song)
"Sliver" is a song by the American rock band Nirvana, written by vocalist and guitarist Kurt Cobain. The song was released as a non-album single by the band's then record label, Sub Pop, in September 1990. The same recording was re-released on the compilation album ''Incesticide'' by DGC in December 1992, and a new music video directed by Kevin Kerslake was released to promote the album. Origin and recording Early history "Sliver" was written in 1990. According to the 1993 biography '' Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana'' by Michael Azerrad, the song was written during a rehearsal with Dan Peters, who briefly played drums with Nirvana while the future of his own band, Mudhoney, was uncertain. According to Azerrad, the lyrics to "Sliver" were written shortly before they were recorded, although an acoustic demo of the song, first released on Nirvana box set ''With the Lights Out'' in November 2004, suggests that Cobain had written some of the lyrics before entering the studio ...

Sliver (film)
''Sliver'' is a 1993 American erotic thriller film based on the Ira Levin novel of the same name about the mysterious occurrences in a privately owned New York high-rise sliver building. Phillip Noyce directed the film, from a screenplay by Joe Eszterhas. Because of a major battle with the MPAA (which originally gave the film an NC-17 rating), the filmmakers were forced to make extensive reshoots before release. These reshoots actually necessitated changing the killer's identity. The film stars Sharon Stone, William Baldwin, and Tom Berenger. When he signed on to direct the film, Noyce remarked, "I liked the script a lot. Or at least, I liked the idea of jumping on the Joe Eszterhas bandwagon." Plot Carly Norris, a book editor and divorcee in her mid-30s, moves into the exclusive New York City sliver building "113". She meets other tenants including Zeke, a video game designer; Jack, a novelist; Vida, a fashion model who moonlights as a call girl; and Gus, a professor of videogr ...

Sliver (novel)
''Sliver'' (1991), by U.S. author Ira Levin, is a novel about the mysterious people in a privately owned high-rise apartment building in New York City, especially after a new tenant — an attractive young working woman in publishing — has moved in. The novel became the basis for the 1993 film of the same name, starring Sharon Stone, William Baldwin, Polly Walker and Tom Berenger. Plot summary When working woman Kay Norris makes the acquaintance of a handsome and friendly young man who lives in the same "sliver" building, she does not know at first that he is the owner. While keeping a low profile himself, he turns out to know an awful lot about the other inhabitants, including many of their secrets. It turns out that he is a modern-day Peeping Tom Lady Godiva (; died between 1066 and 1086), in Old English , was a late Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who is relatively well documented as the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and a patron of various churches and monasteries. Sliver Polygon
A Sliver Polygon, in the context of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), is a small polygon found in vector data that is an artifact of error rather than representing a real-world feature. They have been a recognized source of error since overlay was first invented in the 1970s. History These meaningless polygons were recognized early in the development of GIS. In fact, in 1978 Michael Goodchild found that they constituted the majority of all polygons in some operational GIS. Early programs for performing vector overlay, such as WHIRLPOOL, developed mechanisms for preventing sliver polygons, such as the "epsilon filter" (fuzzy tolerance) In recent decades, most of the focus of software vendors and practitioners has been on improving the quality of GIS data to prevent them. Cause, Prevention, Repair Sliver polygons are typically created when polygons are automatically generated from lines that should be coincident (e.g., an international boundary following a river ''de jure ...

Sliver Building
A sliver building is a tall slender building constructed on a lot with a narrow frontage, typically or less. Since the mid-1980s, one of the most remarkable advances in tall building design has been their construction to unprecedented slenderness ratios. The now defunct New York City Board of Estimate banned these type of structures from many residential zoning districts in New York City in 1983, after residents objected to their construction. The resurgence of the real estate market there prior to the economic downturn of 2008 led to a resurgence of these buildings, now constructed in commercial districts. Splinter
A splinter (also known as a sliver) is a fragment of a larger object, or a foreign body that penetrates or is purposely injected into a body. The foreign body must be lodged inside tissue to be considered a splinter. Splinters may cause initial pain through ripping of flesh and muscle, or infection through bacteria on the foreign object. Splinters commonly consist of wood, but there are many other types, for example, other common types of splinters are glass, plastic, metal, and spines of animals. As with any wound that breaks the skin, splinters can lead to infection, which if left untreated could develop into more serious complications. If a splinter is in the body for more than 2–3 days, or if the wound shows signs of inflammation or tenderness (whether the splinter was removed or not), advice should be sought from a doctor. Getting a splinter Generally, a splinter causes an initial feeling of pain as the sharp object makes its initial penetration through the body. Th ...

The Best Of The Box
''The'' () is a grammatical article in English, denoting persons or things that are already or about to be mentioned, under discussion, implied or otherwise presumed familiar to listeners, readers, or speakers. It is the definite article in English. ''The'' is the most frequently used word in the English language; studies and analyses of texts have found it to account for seven percent of all printed English-language words. It is derived from gendered articles in Old English which combined in Middle English and now has a single form used with nouns of any gender. The word can be used with both singular and plural nouns, and with a noun that starts with any letter. This is different from many other languages, which have different forms of the definite article for different genders or numbers. Pronunciation In most dialects, "the" is pronounced as (with the voiced dental fricative followed by a schwa) when followed by a consonant sound, and as (homophone of the archaic pr ...

Pejorative
A pejorative or slur is a word or grammatical form expressing a negative or a disrespectful connotation, a low opinion, or a lack of respect toward someone or something. It is also used to express criticism, hostility, or disregard. Sometimes, a term is regarded as pejorative in some social or ethnic groups but not in others, or may be originally pejorative but later adopt a non-pejorative sense (or vice versa) in some or all contexts. Etymology The word ''pejorative'' is derived from a Late Latin past participle stem of ''peiorare'', meaning "to make worse", from ''peior'' "worse". Pejoration and melioration In historical linguistics, the process of an inoffensive word becoming pejorative is a form of semantic drift known as pejoration. An example of pejoration is the shift in meaning of the word ''silly'' from meaning that a person was happy and fortunate to meaning that they are foolish and unsophisticated. The process of pejoration can repeat itself around a single concept, ...
