Sliced Bread
Sliced bread is a loaf of bread that has been sliced with a machine and packaged for convenience, as opposed to the consumer cutting it with a knife. It was first sold in 1928, advertised as "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped". By 1933, around 80% of bread sold in the US was pre-sliced, leading to the popular idiom " greatest thing since sliced bread". History Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa, United States, invented the first single loaf bread-slicing machine. A prototype he built in 1912 was destroyed in a fire, and it was not until 1928 that Rohwedder had a fully working machine ready. The first commercial use of the machine was by the Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri, who sold their first slices on July 7, 1928. Their product, "Kleen Maid Sliced Bread", proved to be a success. Battle Creek, Michigan, has a competing claim as the first city to sell bread sliced by Rohwedder's machine; however, historians ... Projection-slice Theorem
In mathematics, the projection-slice theorem, central slice theorem or Fourier slice theorem in two dimensions states that the results of the following two calculations are equal: * Take a two-dimensional function ''f''(r), project (e.g. using the Radon transform) it onto a (one-dimensional) line, and do a Fourier transform of that projection. * Take that same function, but do a two-dimensional Fourier transform first, and then slice it through its origin, which is parallel to the projection line. In operator terms, if * ''F''1 and ''F''2 are the 1- and 2-dimensional Fourier transform operators mentioned above, * ''P''1 is the projection operator (which projects a 2-D function onto a 1-D line), * ''S''1 is a slice operator (which extracts a 1-D central slice from a function), then : F_1 P_1 = S_1 F_2. This idea can be extended to higher dimensions. This theorem is used, for example, in the analysis of medical CT scans where a "projection" is an x-ray image of an internal organ ... Slice Sampling
Slice sampling is a type of Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for pseudo-random number sampling, i.e. for drawing random samples from a statistical distribution. The method is based on the observation that to sample a random variable one can sample uniformly from the region under the graph of its density function. Motivation Suppose you want to sample some random variable ''X'' with distribution ''f''(''x''). Suppose that the following is the graph of ''f''(''x''). The height of ''f''(''x'') corresponds to the likelihood at that point. If you were to uniformly sample ''X'', each value would have the same likelihood of being sampled, and your distribution would be of the form ''f''(''x'') = ''y'' for some ''y'' value instead of some non-uniform function ''f''(''x''). Instead of the original black line, your new distribution would look more like the blue line. In order to sample ''X'' in a manner which will retain the distribution ''f''(''x''), some sampling technique must be u ... Pizza By The Slice
Pizza by the slice is a fast food sold by pizzerias and food stands, making it also often a street food. The pizza slices may be plain or have various toppings. Some restaurants and pizza stands only sell pizza by the slice, while others sell both slices and whole pizzas. The jumbo slice is a large-sized slice of New York-style pizza made in areas of Washington, D.C. Pizza al taglio is a style of rectangular slice of pizza that originated in Rome and is typically sold by weight. Overview Some pizzerias and food stands sell pizza by the slice and whole pizza pies, and some only sell slices. Pizza by the slice is typically pre-baked and pre-sliced, and is characteristically kept warm under heat lamps. Slices are sometimes re-heated or have toppings added before going back into the oven briefly. Selling pizza by the slice offers an economic and speedy dining option to a purchaser while optimizing profits for the seller, as the total value of a pie's slices typically is considerably ... Array Slicing
In computer programming, array slicing is an operation that extracts a subset of elements from an array and packages them as another array, possibly in a different dimension from the original. Common examples of array slicing are extracting a substring from a string of characters, the "''ell''" in "h''ell''o", extracting a row or column from a two-dimensional array, or extracting a vector from a matrix. Depending on the programming language, an array slice can be made out of non-consecutive elements. Also depending on the language, the elements of the new array may be aliased to (i.e., share memory with) those of the original array. Details For "one-dimensional" (single-indexed) arrays vectors, sequence, strings etc. the most common slicing operation is extraction of zero or more consecutive elements. Thus, if we have a vector containing elements (2, 5, 7, 3, 8, 6, 4, 1), and we want to create an array slice from the 3rd to the 6th items, we get (7, 3, 8, 6). In programming l ...
