Shin-hanga
was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, that revitalized the traditional ''ukiyo-e'' art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th–19th century). It maintained the traditional ''ukiyo-e'' collaborative system (''hanmoto'' system) where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor, as opposed to the parallel ''sōsaku-hanga'' (creative prints) movement which advocated the principles of "self-drawn" (''jiga''), "self-carved" (''jikoku'') and "self-printed" (''jizuri''), according to which the artist, with the desire of expressing the self, is the sole creator of art. The movement was initiated and nurtured by publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (1885–1962), and flourished from around 1915 to 1942, resuming on a smaller scale after the Second World War through the 1950s and 1960s. was an artist in Japan. At the forefront of the ''shin-hanga'' ("new prints") movement, a revival of ''ukiyo-e'', he designed fourteen Woodblock printing in Japan, woodblock prints which are regarded as masterpieces of the genre. Early life Hashiguchi was born Hashiguchi Kiyoshi in Kagoshima Prefecture. His father Hashiguchi Kanemizu was a samurai and amateur painter in the Shijō school, Shijō style. His father hired a teacher in the Kano style of painting in 1899 when Kiyoshi was only ten. Kiyoshi took the name of Goyō while attending the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, from which he graduated best in his class in 1905. The name Goyō was chosen because of his fondness for the five needle pine in his father's garden. Sōsaku-hanga
was an art movement of woodblock printing which was conceived in early 20th-century Japan. It stressed the artist as the sole creator motivated by a desire for self-expression, and advocated principles of art that is "self-drawn" (自画 ''jiga''), "self-carved" (自刻 ''jikoku'') and "self-printed" (自摺 ''jizuri''). As opposed to the parallel ''shin-hanga'' ("new prints") movement that maintained the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor, creative print artists distinguished themselves as creators of art for art's sake. Shinsui Itō
Shinsui Itō ( ja, 伊東 深水, Itō Shinsui; 4 February 1898 – 8 May 1972) was the pseudonym of a ''Nihonga'' painter and ''ukiyo-e'' woodblock printing, woodblock print artist in Taishō period, Taishō- and Shōwa period, Shōwa-period Japan. He was one of the great names of the ''shin-hanga'' art movement, which revitalized the traditional art after it began to decline with the advent of photography in the early 20th century. Bunten
The is a Japanese art exhibition established in 1907. The exhibition consists of five art faculties: Japanese Style and Western Style Painting, Sculpture, Craft as Art, and Sho (calligraphy). During each exhibition, works of the great masters are shown alongside works of new but talented artists. It claims to be the largest combined art exhibition of its kind in the world and the most popular in Japan. Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. Modernization theory is used to explain the process of modernization within societies. ''Japonisme'' is a French term that refers to the popularity and influence of Japanese art and design among a number of Western European artists in the nineteenth century following the forced reopening of foreign trade with Japan in 1858. In European academic traditions, fine art is developed primarily for aesthetics or creative expression, distinguishing it from decorative art or applied art, which also has to serve some practical function, such as pottery or most metalwork.
