Shimla (; ; also known as Simla, List of renamed Indian cities and states#Himachal Pradesh, the official name until 1972) is the capital and the largest city of the States and union territories of India, northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. In 1864, Shimla was declared as the summer capital of British Raj, British India. After Indian independence movement, independence, the city became the capital of East Punjab and was later made the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. It is the principal commercial, cultural and educational centre of the state. Small hamlets were recorded before 1815 when British forces took control of the area. Mall Road, Shimla
Mall Road is the major hangout point and shopping center in Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, India. This is a list of urban agglomerations/cities and towns as per 2011 census in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala , Solan, Palampur, and Mandi became municipal corporations after 2011 census hence their area has been expanded resulting in a change of population, which has been updated as recent one. Most of the cities and towns appear to have larger population than the above mentioned figures due to rapid outgrowth in the recent years. For example, Baddi has emerged as one of the largest cities considering rapid industrialisation and urbanisation in the past decade. Christ Church (Shimla)
Christ Church, Shimla, is the second oldest church in North India, after St John's Church in Meerut. Worship is conducted in Hindi and English. Presently, Rev. Sohan lal is the Presbyter-In-Charge (Priest/ father of Christ Church, The Ridge Shimla. History Simla was all forest when the first Europeans came to these hills in 1820s. There were two or three dilapidated shepherd's huts and a small "Hanuman temple" situated on the Jakhoo Hill. Kali Bari Mandir is a Hindu temple situated on Bantony Hill, Shimla. The temple is dedicated to fearsome reincarnation of Goddess Kali, known as Shyamala, after which the Shimla city is named. The goddess is believed to have existed near Jakhoo. History Kali Bari temple was originally built in 1845 by a Bengali Brahmin Ram Charan Brahamchari in the vicinity of Rothney Castle on Jakhoo Hill. The Rashtrapati Niwas (), formerly known as Viceregal Lodge, is located on the Observatory Hills of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. It was formerly the residence of the British Viceroy of India. Mahasu Pahari ( Takri: ) is a Western Pahari (Himachali, Takri: ) language spoken in Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as Mahasui or Mahasuvi. The speaking population is about 1,000,000 (2001).
