Sheading
Local government ( gv, gurneilys ynnydagh) in the Isle of Man was formerly based on six sheadings, which were divided into seventeen parishes (today referred to as "ancient parishes"). The island is today divided for local government purposes into town districts, village districts, parish districts, and "districts", as follows: *Four town districts: Douglas (borough), Castletown, Peel and Ramsey *Two "districts": Michael, Onchan *Two village districts: Port Erin and Port St Mary *Thirteen parish districts: Andreas, Arbory and Rushen, Ballaugh, Braddan, Bride, Garff, German, Jurby, Lezayre, Malew, Marown, Patrick, Santon Sheadings The Isle of Man was historically divided into six sheadings ( gv, sheadinyn): in the traditional clockwise order, they are Glenfaba, Michael, Ayre, Garff, Middle, and Rushen. Marown
Marown ( , rhymes with "gown"; gv, Marooney) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is the only landlocked parish on the Island. It is located in the centre of the island, in the sheading of Middle, though historically, from 1796 until 1986, it was in the sheading of Glenfaba. Settlements in the parish include Braaid, Crosby and Glen Vine. Local government For the purposes of local government, the whole of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. Although Marown lies east of the watershed and is currently in the sheading of Middle, it is also grouped for various local government purposes with the west of the island: it falls under the aegis of the Peel and Western District Housing Committee, Western Traffic Management Group, Western Neighbourhood Policing etc. The Captain of the Parish (since 2001) is Charles Fargher MBE. Santon (parish)
Santon ( gv, Stondane), historically Santan, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the south-east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Middle. Settlements in the parish include Newtown. Local government For the purposes of local government, the whole of the historic parish forms a single parish district with commissioners. The Captain of the Parish (since 2003) is Donald James Gelling, CBE. Politics Santon parish is part of the Middle constituency, which elects two members to the House of Keys. From 1986 until 2016 it was in the Malew and Santon constituency. Geography It has an area of approximately and is the island's smallest parish. Onchan (parish)
Onchan ( ; gv, Connaghyn), historically Kirk Conchan, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Middle, though before 1796 it was in the sheading of Garff. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Onchan is now covered by part of the borough of Douglas, the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man. Local government For the purposes of local government, most of the historic parish forms a single district with Commissioners. In 1896, an area in the south-west of the historic parish of Onchan became part of the borough of Douglas, since when it has been governed by a municipal corporation with 18 councillors and an elected mayor. Braddan ( gv, Braddan) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Middle. Administratively, a small part of the historic parish of Braddan is now covered by part of the borough of Douglas, the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man. Other settlements in the parish include Port Soderick, Strang, Tromode and Union Mills. Middle ( gv, Medall) is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) and consists of the four historic parishes of Braddan, Marown, Onchan and Santon. Historically, from 1796 until 1986 Marown was in the sheading of Glenfaba, and before 1796 Onchan was in the sheading of Garff. In addition to the current districts listed above, the sheading of Middle also includes the borough of Douglas, the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man. Other settlements in the sheading include Port Soderick, Strang, Tromode and Union Mills (all in the parish of Braddan), Braaid, Crosby and Glen Vine (all in the parish of Marown), and Newtown in the parish of Santon. Malew
Malew ( ; gv, Malew) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the south of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Rushen. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Malew is now covered by the town of Castletown. As a result, there is a small exclave of the parish district which includes Scarlett point. Other settlements in the parish include Ballasalla, Derbyhaven and St Mark's. Garff
Garff () is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) and consists of the two historic parishes of Lonan and Maughold. Before 1796 it also included the parish of Onchan. Administratively, since May 2016 the sheading of Garff has been covered by a single Garff local authority, a parish district, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. The town of Ramsey, which is administered separately, covers areas of two historic parishes (Maughold, and Lezayre in the sheading of Ayre). It is treated as part of Garff for some purposes, e.g. the coroner. Other settlements in the sheading include Baldrine and Ballabeg (both in the parish of Lonan), and Ballure in the parish of Maughold. Etymology The origin of the name is uncertain. Jurby
Jurby ( on, djúra-bý – deer settlement - animal park) () is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the north-west of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) in the sheading of Michael. It is located in the south of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) and consists of the three historic parishes of Arbory, Malew and (Kirk Christ) Rushen. Administratively, the sheading of Rushen also includes the town of Castletown, Isle of Man, Castletown and the village districts of Port Erin and Port St Mary.
