Rugby league, in New South Wales, is the most popular participation and spectator sport. It currently has the highest attendance and television audiences of the various codes of football in the state, far outstripping any other competitors. The state has over 400,000 active participants in the sport with a further 1 million playing the sport in schools, over 500 active clubs across the state, and 10 clubs in the national professional competition, named the NRL. Rugby league in Australia began in the country's largest city called Sydney in 1907 when the New South Wales Rugby League was formed as a professional competition, following the rules of the Rugby Football League, Northern Rugby Football Union in England. Central Coast Division Of Country Rugby League
The Central Coast Division of Country Rugby League is a rugby league competition based on the Central Coast of New South Wales between Sydney and Newcastle. It is currently ran by Terrigal Junior and longtime volunteer Ben Spackman he has been president for both Terrigal junior and senior clubs and has coached multiple teams throughout his years at the club. Spackman has been running the central coast competition for multiple years now and has made significant changes to the central coast competitions. It was founded in 1947 as a junior competition for the Newcastle club, Lakes United. In 1967, it was upgraded again to full membership of the Country Rugby League as Group 12. In 1981, it was renamed Central Coast Division. The division covers the entire region of the Central Coast from Woy Woy and Umina in the south up to Budgewoi and Gwandalan in the north. Group 2 Rugby League
Group 2 is a rugby league competition on the north coast of New South Wales Since 1966, run under the auspices of the Country Rugby League. The Group 2 area runs from Grafton in the north to Macksville in the south. Group 2 teams played for many decades before 1966 when some redistribution, amalgamation or control mechanism presumably changed. Teams on the Nambucca River, namely Bowraville, Macksville and Nambucca Heads played in a southern division against Kempsey, Smithtown, Port Macquarie and Wauchope before 1966. Woodbridge Cup
The Woodbridge Cup is a rugby league competition run by the New South Wales Country Rugby League. It encompasses smaller senior clubs in the Mid-West and Central West of the state. The neighbouring Mid-West Cup competition's remaining clubs merged into the league in 2022 when that league initially folded (it has since re-formed without the teams that joined the Woodbridge Cup). For all intents and purposes, it is a second division competition in the Group 11 and from 2022, Group 10 areas. History The competition began as the Group 9 Second Division in the 1940s, with clubs from towns such as Binalong, Stockinbingal and Boorowa among others. Group 17 Rugby League
Group 17 is a rugby league competition based in the Riverina and Central West regions of New South Wales, Australia. The competition collapsed in 2006 and reformed in 2018 as the Western Riverina Community Cup with six teams. The season runs from mid-May to late July, and features a knockout, six regular season rounds, and a three week finals series culminating in the Grand Final which is hosted by a different team each year. History Group 17 was formed in 1935 and originally centred around Griffith and Leeton, but was suspended during World War II. Sunraysia-Riverlands Rugby League
The Sunraysia-Riverlands Rugby League is a rugby league football competition in Victoria, Australia held by NRL Victoria. The league was formed in 1991 representing 5 clubs in the far south-west corner of New South Wales, along with 1 club from Victoria. During its first 4 seasons, the league was overseen by both the Country Rugby League & Victorian Rugby League, before the competition was disbanded in 1995. The league was reformed in 2011 with five clubs, however as of 2022, this has been reduced to 2 clubs both located in Victoria. As both clubs remaining are from Victoria, sole control of the league passed to NRL Victoria. The Outback Rugby League Cup is a NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) Group Competition which is based in Broken Hill in the far west of New South Wales and surrounding districts such as Wilcannia and Menindee. The competition folded in 1998 but was revived in 2007. Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League
The Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League (NRRRL) is a rugby league competition run in the far north of New South Wales, Australia. It is run under the auspices of the Country Rugby League. The league formed in 2005 as an extended Group 1 Rugby League competition, featuring teams from Group 18 Rugby League. Prior to this, teams from Group 18 played in a competition with teams from the Gold Coast region of Queensland. Both Group 1 and Group 18 continue to run junior competitions. Newcastle & Hunter Community Rugby League is the governing body of second tier rugby league in the Newcastle and Hunter region. Formed in 2006 after a merger between the Maitland & Coalfields Rugby League and Lower Hunter Rugby League Competitions. It is now the largest senior Rugby League competition in the world. Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League competitions consists of five senior men's divisions, A Grade, B Grade, C Grade, Northern Conference & Southern Conference, as well as two Ladies League Tag divisions and Ladies Tackle. Newcastle Rugby League
The Newcastle Rugby League is a local rugby league football competition in Newcastle, Australia. It is one of the oldest rugby league competitions in Australia, founded in 1910. A Newcastle representative team was also assembled from players in the League during most of the 20th century. The first grade competition also comprises the NSWRL Presidents Cup Northern Conference. NRL Victoria
NRL Victoria (abbreviated as NRLVic, and formerly the Victorian Rugby League) is responsible for administering the game of rugby league in the Australian state of Victoria (Australia), Victoria. Victoria is an Affiliated State of the overall Australian governing body the National Rugby League. The VRL commenced in 1952 and has been running each year since. Mid West Cup
The Mid West Community Cup is a rugby league competition in the Central West area of New South Wales. The premiers are awarded the Blayney Citizens' Cup, the oldest continuously awarded trophy in Country Rugby League, with Neville the first recipients in 1913. For all intents and purposes, it is a third division competition in the Group 10/11 area. In its last season under its original model in 2021, the competition encompassed teams from Bathurst, Kandos, Lithgow, Oberon, Orange and Portland. Some of the remaining clubs in the competition merged into the Woodbridge Cup in 2022 after two incomplete seasons due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, the competition reformed in late 2022 under a new community cup model similar to Group 17.
