Rowing At The 1920 Summer Olympics
Rowing at the 1920 Summer Olympics, the first Olympics after World War I, saw five events. The competitions were held from 27 to 29 August in Antwerp, Belgium. The event was marked by the arrival of future triple gold medalists John B. Kelly Sr., Jack Beresford and Paul Costello. Kelly and Beresford would stage a dramatic dual for the singles title, with Kelly prevailing. Immediately after his victory, Kelly would step into the double with his cousin Paul Costello, and easily win the gold in that event. Beresford, though he didn't win gold in these Olympics, would medal at five straight Olympics. In the eight, the United States was represented by the United States Naval Academy. The United States would be represented by university crews at the next seven games in the men's eight, winning each time. Georges Piot
Georges Piot (14 September 1896 – 5 April 1980) was a French rower who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics and in the 1928 Summer Olympics. In 1924 he won the silver medal with his partner Maurice Monney-Bouton in the coxless pair event. Robert Morrison (rower)
Robert Erskine Morrison (26 March 1902 – 19 February 1980) was a British rower who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Morrison was born at Richmond on Thames, and he was educated at Eton College and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the Pitt Club. At Cambridge, Morrison, James MacNabb, Maxwell Eley and Terence Sanders, who had rowed together at Eton, made up the coxless four that in 1922 at Henley won the Stewards' Challenge Cup as Eton Vikings and the Visitors' Challenge Cup as Third Trinity Boat Club. Morrison rowed for Cambridge in the Boat Race in 1923 and was again in the winning crew for the Stewards' Challenge Cup The coxless four crew won Steward's at Henley again in 1924 and went on to win the gold medal for Great Britain rowing at the 1924 Summer Olympics. James MacNabb
James Alexander MacNabb (26 December 1901 – 6 April 1990) was a British rower who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics. MacNabb was born at Keighley, West Yorkshire, the son of Rev. James Frederick MacNabb, and his wife Margaret Elizabeth Waterworth. He was educated at Eton and first rowed at Henley in 1920 as a member of the Eton Crew that reached the semi-finals of the Ladies' Challenge Plate. He then went to Trinity College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, MacNabb, Maxwell Eley, Robert Morrison and Terence Sanders, who had rowed together at Eton, made up the coxless four that in 1922 at Henley won the Stewards' Challenge Cup as Eton Vikings and the Visitors' Challenge Cup as Third Trinity Boat Club. Charles Ryves Maxwell Eley (16 September 1902 – 15 January 1983) was a British rower who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal with the British coxless four. Family Eley was born in Samford, Suffolk, the eldest of four sons of Charles Cuthbert Eley, a barrister and noted gardener, and Ethel Maxwell Ryves. His great-grandfather co-founded the Eley Brothers company. Maxwell was the older brother of banker Sir Geoffrey Eley. Harold Charles Wilson (15 January 1903 – 2 May 1981) was an American rower and Olympian. He was born in Washington Boro, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the oldest child of William B. Wilson and Henrietta A. Charles. By 1910, his family had moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. Wilson was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team, representing the United States at the Games of the VIII Olympiad held in Paris, France from 4 May through 27 July 1924. He competed in the paired oar shell with coxswain rowing event (crew). The boat included Wilson (stroke), Leon Butler (bow seat), and Edward Jennings (cox). Rowing out of the Pennsylvania Barge Club of Philadelphia, the crew qualified for the U.S. Olympic team on 13 June 1924 at national trials held in Philadelphia.
