Raïcore
Taqwacore is a subgenre of punk rock, punk music dealing with Islam, its culture, and interpretation. Originally conceived in Michael Muhammad Knight's 2003 novel, ''The Taqwacores'', the name is a portmanteau of "hardcore punk, hardcore" and the Arabic word "taqwa" (تقوى), which is usually translated as "piety" or the quality of being "God in Islam, God-fearing", and thus roughly denotes reverence and love of the divine. The scene is composed mainly of young Muslim artists living in the US and other Western countries, many of whom openly reject traditionalist interpretations of Islam, and thus live their own lifestyle within the religion or without. History Muslim punk music dates at least to the 1979 founding of British band Alien Kulture. In the 1990s, Nation Records act Fun-Da-Mental and Asian Dub Foundation emerged solidifying the first examples of UK Muslim generated punk. Fearless Iranians From Hell
Fearless Iranians from Hell were a band from San Antonio, Texas. Founded in 1983, their sound was initially hardcore/punk and later changed to crossover/thrash metal. The band was formed in 1983 by members of the group Marching Plague, who donned ski masks, posing as terrorists. Photographer John Cohen related that the original lineup only played three or four shows before the lineup started changing. Ras Matthew (born Matthew McChesney) was 16 when he sang for the group in the 1980s. He left the band, later becoming a Rastafarian and playing with the reggae group Buffalo Soldier. Fearless Iranians from Hell signed to the Boner Records label. Their first release in 1986 was their self-titled 7" ''Fearless Iranians from Hell''. Fedayeen is an American punk band, composed of Abu Taha al-Amriki, Raheem Vukas, Hajirah D. and Taha Husayn. They identify themselves with the Taqwacore Movement, a Muslim punk based sub-culture known for challenging extremism, homophobia, sexism, and violence. History Fedayeen formed in 2009. The band's first single, "I Love Osama bin Laden", garnered attention in 23 countries (based on mp3 requests) in the first three weeks after release. A new EP, "The Fedayeen Experience", was released in June 2010, followed by the two song CD single "List the Dead", a tribute to Palestinian children killed by the IDF. They planned on releasing their first LP, 'Peace, Love, and Kalashnikovs', on September 11, 2010. Aki Nawaz
Aki Nawaz (born Haq Nawaz Qureshi) is an English singer, rapper and musician and part of the band Fun-Da-Mental. He is best known for his controversial lyrics. Profile In the 1980s, using his proper name Haq Qureshi, he played drums with the gothic rock band Southern Death Cult, a forerunner to The Cult, featuring Ian Astbury on vocals. When Astbury moved on to found his own band, the remaining musicians stayed together for a time as Getting the Fear, recruiting new singer Bee Hampshire from Futon, but eventually broke up. In 1986, Nawaz moved to London, set up a management company and signed artists to major record labels. Asian Dub Foundation (ADF) is an English electronic music band that combines musical styles including rap rock, dub, dancehall, ragga, and South Asian music. The group also includes traditional rock instruments such as electric bass and guitar, which acknowledges a punk rock influence.
