Rugby union in Finland is a minor but growing sport. With both Men's and Women's 15's teams are represented in world rankings and both Women and Men's Sevens teams competing internationally. Finland Men's 15's team is currently ranked 86th out of 105 by World Rugby. Finland Women's 15's team is currently ranked 47th out of 56 by World Rugby. Governing body The governing body is the Finnish Rugby Federation (Suomen Rugbyliitto) (: History Finland was the last of the major Nordic countries to take up rugby. Both Denmark and Sweden started playing rugby in the 20th century, and more recently Norway in the 1980s and 1990s. Rugby World Cup
The Rugby World Cup is a men's rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, who according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. The tournament was first held in 1987 and was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Four countries have won the trophy; New Zealand and South Africa three times, Australia twice, and England once. South Africa is the current champion, having defeated England in the 2019 tournament final. Rugby World Cup Sevens (RWCS) is the quadrennial world championship of rugby sevens, a variant of rugby union. Organised by World Rugby, it currently consists of men's and women's tournaments, and is the highest level of competition in the sport outside of the Summer Olympics. The first tournament was held in 1993 in Scotland, and was won by England. The winners of the men's tournament are awarded the Melrose Cup, named after the Scottish town of Melrose where the first rugby sevens game was played. A women's tournament was introduced at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai, and was first won by Australia. The Finnish Rugby Federation (SRL) ( fi, Suomen Rugbyliitto) is recognised as the national governing body for rugby in Finland. It is a member of several organisations, including World Rugby and Rugby Europe. The SRL was founded in 1968 and has as its members Finnish rugby clubs and the Finland Rugby Referees Association. SRL's mission is to develop the sport in Finland and support the local clubs in their activities. The organisation is responsible for the Men's National XV Team, Men's National Sevens Team, Women's National XV Team, Women's National Sevens Team.
