Resettlement Area
Resettlement Areas, or Resettlement Estates ( zh, 徙置區) are an early form of public housing in Hong Kong. They were built between 1954 and 1975. The designs used are Mark I to Mark VII. Most are found in the new towns of Hong Kong ( Kwun Tong, Kwai Chung, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun, and Yuen Long). It was managed by the Resettlement Department. In 1973, it was organized into Hong Kong Housing Authority. Then, resettlement areas began to be referred as 'estates'. It was classified as 'Category B Public Housing Estates'. Newer housing projects are called 'Category A Public Housing Estates'. Today, only Mei Ho House remains standing as a Mark I block. History It began when a fire destroyed Shek Kip Mei in 1953. Interim Housing
Interim housing () is temporary housing in Hong Kong for those not eligible for a flat in a public housing estate, but affected by disaster, fire, and redevelopment. It replaced Temporary Housing Area with buildings that are more resilient and space saving. Some of them reuse old blocks in public housing estates; others use pre-fabricated building components. Shek Lei Estate
Shek Lei Estate (), also known by Shek Lei (, both are currently used) is a public housing estate in Hong Kong, situated in the Shek Lei Pui () area in northeast Kwai Chung, New Territories, near Shek Yam Estate, On Yam Estate and Shek Yam East Estate. The estate is separated into two parts, namely Shek Lei (I) Estate () and Shek Lei (II) Estate (). It has a total of 21 residential blocks with a population of about 40,000, as well as two shopping centres. It is the second-largest public housing estate in Kwai Chung, after Kwai Chung Estate. Kwai Chung Estate
Kwai Chung Estate () is a public housing estate in Kwai Chung, New Territories, Hong Kong. It is the largest public housing estate in Kwai Tsing District and consists of sixteen residential buildings completed between 1997 and 2008. History The phase 1 and phase 3–5 of its redevelopment were completed progressively in 1997, 2000 and 2005. Starting from 1993, the Housing Department has embarked on the redevelopment of Kwai Chung Estate. After 12 years of work, the entire redevelopment project was realised in 2005. Being the largest public housing estate in Hong Kong, Kwai Chung Estate provides 11,759 rental flats for about 33,300 people. Shek Kip Mei Estate
Shek Kip Mei Estate is the first public housing estate in Hong Kong. It is located in Sham Shui Po and is under the management of the Hong Kong Housing Authority. The estate was constructed as a result of a fire in Shek Kip Mei in 1953, to settle the families of inhabitants in the squats over the hill who lost their homes in one night. Originally constructed in 1953 to alleviate the immediate housing needs, the units in this "Mark I" estate were utilitarian. Redevelopment of the estate commenced in 1972, with new towers coming on stream between 1979 and 1982. Site 1 of redevelopment was occupied in 2007.
