American Redstart
The American redstart (''Setophaga ruticilla'') is a New World warbler. It is unrelated to the Old World (common) redstart. Taxonomy The American redstart was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the 10th edition of his ''Systema Naturae'' under the binomial name ''Motacilla ruticilla''. The genus name ''Setophaga'' is from Ancient Greek σής : ''sēs'' (genitive σητός : sētós) "moth", and ', "eating". The specific ''ruticilla'' is New Latin for "redstart" from Latin ''rutilus'', "red", and New Latin ''cilla'', "tail". "Redstart" refers to the male's red tail, "start" being an old word for tail. Description The American redstart is a smallish warbler. It measures in total length and has a wingspan of . USS Redstart (AM-378)
USS ''Redstart'' (AM-378/MSF-378) was an commissioned by the United States Navy for service in World War II. Her task, as a fleet minesweeper, was to clear mines as the fleet proceeded into battle areas. ''Redstart'' was built in Savannah, Georgia by the Savannah Machine and Foundry Co., and was laid down on 14 June 1944, launched on 18 October 1944, and finally commissioned on 4 April 1945. Service history Post-World War II operations Following a shakedown cruise off the Virginia and Maryland coasts, the ship proceeded through the Panama Canal and berthed at Pipeline Pier in Long Beach, California. For use in her minesweeping operations, the ship carried, on her fantail, towable finned devices called "pigs" because of their size and shape, plus cables with cutters, plus other devices used for removing and destroying mines, such as acoustical hammer and hedgehog weapons. The common redstart (''Phoenicurus phoenicurus''), or often simply redstart, is a small passerine bird in the genus ''Phoenicurus''. Like its relatives, it was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family, (Turdidae), but is now known to be an Old World flycatcher (family Muscicapidae). Taxonomy and systematics The first formal description of the common redstart was by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of his ''Systema Naturae'' under the binomial name ''Motacilla phoenicurus''. The genus ''Phoenicurus'' was introduced by the English naturalist Thomas Forster in 1817. The genus and species name ''phoenicurus'' is from Ancient Greek ''phoinix'', "red", and ''-ouros'' -"tailed". Two subspecies are accepted. The nominate ''P. p. phoenicurus'' is found all over Europe and reaches into Siberia. Phoenicurus
''Phoenicurus'' is a genus of passerine birds in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae, native to Europe, Asia and Africa. They are named redstarts from their orange-red tails ('start' is an old name for a tail). They are small insectivores, the males mostly brightly coloured in various combinations of red, blue, white, and black, the females light brown with a red tail. A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2010 led to a reorganization of the Old World flycatchers family in which the two species in ''Rhyacornis'' and the single species in ''Chaimarrornis'' were merged into ''Phoenicurus''. The genus ''Phoenicurus'' was introduced by the English naturalist Thomas Forster in 1817. The type species (by tautonymy) is the common redstart (''Phoenicurus phoenicurus''). White-bellied Redstart
The white-bellied redstart (''Luscinia phaenicuroides'') is a species of bird of the family Muscicapidae. It is found in Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam, where its natural habitat is temperate forests. The white-bellied redstart was previously the only species in the genus ''Hodgsonius''. A large molecular phylogenetic study published in 2010 found that the white-bellied redstart formed part of a clade that included the common nightingale.
