Quadrupedalism
Quadrupedalism is a form of locomotion where four limbs are used to bear weight and move around. An animal or machine that usually maintains a four-legged posture and moves using all four limbs is said to be a quadruped (from Latin ''quattuor'' for "four", and ''pes'', ''pedis'' for "foot"). Quadruped animals are found among both vertebrates and invertebrates. Quadrupeds vs. tetrapods Although the words ‘quadruped’ and ‘tetrapod’ are both derived from terms meaning ‘four-footed’, they have distinct meanings. A tetrapod is any member of the taxonomic unit Tetrapoda (which is defined by descent from a specific four-limbed ancestor), whereas a quadruped actually uses four limbs for locomotion. Not all tetrapods are quadrupeds and not all entities that could be described as ‘quadrupedal’ are tetrapods. Kenichi Ito (athlete)
, is a Japanese athlete from Tokyo. He holds the Guinness World Record for running 100 meters on Quadrupedalism#Quadrupedalism in humans, all four limbs, setting a best time of 15.71 seconds in the Komazawa Olympic Park in Tokyo, 6 November 2015, shaving 0.15 seconds off the previous record of 15.86 seconds by Katsumi Tamakoshi. Before Tamakoshi's record, Ito also held the record of 16.87 seconds, set on 14 November 2013. He also held the record before that, having set a time of 17.47 seconds on 15 November 2012, and the record before that of 18.58 seconds in 2008. Ito spent nine years studying how animals like Patas monkey, African patas monkeys move. He used to work as a janitor and mopped floors on all fours to practice his four-limbed running technique. Tetrapod
Tetrapods (; ) are four-limbed vertebrate animals constituting the superclass Tetrapoda (). It includes extant and extinct amphibians, sauropsids ( reptiles, including dinosaurs and therefore birds) and synapsids (pelycosaurs, extinct therapsids and all extant mammals). Tetrapods evolved from a clade of primitive semiaquatic animals known as the Tetrapodomorpha which, in turn, evolved from ancient lobe-finned fish (sarcopterygians) around 390 million years ago in the Middle Devonian period; their forms were transitional between lobe-finned fishes and true four-limbed tetrapods. Limbed vertebrates (tetrapods in the broad sense of the word) are first known from Middle Devonian trackways, and body fossils became common near the end of the Late Devonian but these were all aquatic.
