The Politics of Sardinia ( Sardinia, Italy) takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democracy, whereby the President of Regional Government is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the Regional Government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Regional Council of Sardinia. Legislative branch The Regional Council of Sardinia (''Consiglio Regionale della Sardegna'') is composed of 60 members. The Italian Democratic Socialist Party (, PSDI), also known as Italian Social Democratic Party, was a minor social-democratic political party in Italy. The longest serving partner in government for Christian Democracy, the PSDI had been an important force in Italian politics, before the 1990s decline in votes and members. The Italian People's Party ( it, Partito Popolare Italiano, PPI) was a Christian-democratic, centrist and Christian-leftist political party in Italy. The party was a member of the European People's Party (EPP). The PPI was the formal successor of the Christian Democracy (DC), but was soon deprived of its conservative elements, which successively formed the Christian Democratic Centre (CCD) in 1994 and the United Christian Democrats (CDU) in 1995. 1999 Sardinian Regional Election
The Sardinian regional election of 1999 took place on 13 and 27 June 1999. The centre-right coalition led by Mauro Pili won the election but was short of a clear majority; Pili, who was appointed President of the Region was not able to form a majority and was soon replaced by the defeated candidate, Gian Mario Selis, who was not able to win the confidence vote of the Regional Council himself. The former President Mario Floris was asked to form a government avoiding a new regional election. 1994 Sardinian Regional Election
The Sardinian regional election of 1994 took place on 12 and 26 June 1994. The election took place under the provision of a new electoral law, which created a new system under which for the first time ever voters could express an indirect choice for the President through voting the candidate's coalition. The election was won on the second round by the Progressives' coalition and Federico Palomba (PDS) was elected President of the Region for the 1994–1999 term. Although he didn't manage to win a majority of seats in the Regional Council, he was able to form a government with the external support of centrist and regionalist parties.
