Point-to-point (steeplechase)
A point-to-point is a form of horse racing over fences for hunting horses and amateur riders. In Ireland, where the sport is open to licensed professional trainers, many of the horses will appear in these races before they compete in National Hunt races. Consequently, the Irish point-to-point is more used as a nursery for future young stars: a horse that wins its debut point-to-point in Ireland will often sell for a high price. Whilst professional trainers are specifically excluded from running horses in point-to-points in Great Britain (other than their own personal horses), the days of the farmer running his hunter at the local point-to-point have gone (replaced to some extent by hunter chases). Increasingly, horses are run from "livery yards" - unlicensed but otherwise professional training establishments, sometimes closely allied with a licensed yard. Horse Racing Ireland
Horse Racing Ireland (HRI; ga, Rásaíocht Capaill na hÉireann) is the governing body of horse racing on the island of Ireland. It is based in the Curragh, County Kildare, next to the racecourse of that name. HRI was founded in 2001, succeeding the Irish Horseracing Authority, itself the 1994 successor to the Racing Board founded in 1945. HRI's mission statement is "to develop and promote Ireland as a world centre of excellence for horse racing and breeding". Like most other sports, horse racing is run on an All-Ireland basis, so HRI is responsible for racing in both the Republic of Ireland, which has 24 racecourses, and Northern Ireland, which has two racecourses. The Turf Club was the regulatory body for horse racing in Ireland until 31 December 2017. History The origin of the Turf Club was a regulatory body known as ''the Society of Sportsmen'', which became ''The Jockey Club'' by 1755, before taking on its present name of the ''Turf Club'' in 1784. Despite being independent of the English Jockey Club, it did on occasion referred disputes to that organisation. A similar body for National Hunt races, the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee, was later formed under the Turf Club to ensure fair running of National Hunt meetings. Activities The Turf Club regulated both Flat and National Hunt racing in Ireland. It incorporated the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee (INHSC). New Forest Pony
The New Forest pony is one of the recognised mountain and moorland or native pony breeds of the British Isles. Height varies from around ; ponies of all heights should be strong, workmanlike, and of a good riding type. They are valued for hardiness, strength, and sure-footedness.
