Pitzer College is a private liberal arts college in Claremont, California. One of the Claremont Colleges, the college has a curricular emphasis on the social sciences, behavioral sciences, international programs, and media studies. Pitzer is known for its social justice culture and experimental pedagogical approach. History Pitzer was founded in 1963 as a women's college by Russell K. Pitzer (1878–1978), a California citrus magnate, philanthropist, and Pomona College alumnus. In April 1963, John W. Atherton, the dean of faculty and a professor of English at Claremont Men's College (now Claremont McKenna College) was hired as Pitzer's first president, and over the next seventeen months he recruited students, faculty, and trustees and constructed Scott and Sanborn Halls just in time for the fall 1964 semester. Kenneth Sanborn Pitzer
Kenneth Sanborn Pitzer (January 6, 1914 – December 26, 1997) was an American physical and theoretical chemist, educator, and university president. He was described as "one of the most influential physical chemists of his era" whose work "spanned almost all of the important fields of physical chemistry: thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, molecular structure, quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, chemical bonding, relativistic chemical effects, properties of concentrated aqueous salt solutions, kinetics, and conformational analysis." Biography He received his B.S. in 1935 from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1937. Alexander White Pitzer
Alexander White Pitzer (1834–1927) was an American Presbyterian clergyman. He was the author of several books on theology, and was a professor of biblical history and literature at Howard University. Biography Alexander White Pitzer was born in Salem, Virginia, on September 14, 1834. He attended Virginia Collegiate Institute (Roanoke College) and was graduated as valedictorian from Hampden–Sydney College in 1854, and at the Danville Theological Seminary, Kentucky, in 1857, after which he was pastor of Presbyterian churches in Leavenworth, Kansas, Sparta, Georgia, and Bedford, Virginia, Liberty, Virginia, and in 1808 organized the Central Presbyterian church in Washington DC, where he served until 1898. From 1875 he was also professor of biblical history and literature in Howard University in that city. William Bruce Pitzer
William Bruce Pitzer (April 13, 1917 - October 29, 1966) was an officer of the United States Navy whose death is speculated to have had some connection with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Life and career Pitzer joined the Navy reserve in 1934 at the age of seventeen and trained as a Radiologic technologist. After discharge in 1939, he worked for three years as chief technologist at the Episcopal Ear, Eye and Nose Hospital. He re-enlisted in 1942 after the United States entered World War II. His obituaries listed him as "a consultant to the visual arts department of Montgomery Junior College". Death At the time of the Kennedy assassination, Pitzer worked at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) where Kennedy's autopsy took place.
