Phosphotransferases are a category of enzymes ( EC number 2.7) that catalyze phosphorylation reactions. Enzymes () are proteins that act as biological catalysts by accelerating chemical reactions. Mannitol is a type of sugar alcohol used as a sweetener and medication. It is used as a low calorie sweetener as it is poorly absorbed by the intestines. The Enzyme Commission number (EC number) is a numerical classification scheme for enzymes, based on the chemical reactions they catalyze.
