Orexin (), also known as hypocretin, is a neuropeptide that regulates arousal, wakefulness, and appetite. Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a long-term neurological disorder that involves a decreased ability to regulate sleep–wake cycles. Symptoms often include periods of excessive daytime sleepiness and brief involuntary sleep episodes. About 70% of those affected also experience episodes of sudden loss of muscle strength, known as cataplexy. Narcolepsy paired with cataplexy is evidenced to be an autoimmune disorder. These experiences of cataplexy can be brought on by strong emotions. Less commonly, there may be vivid hallucinations or an inability to move (sleep paralysis) while falling asleep or waking up. People with narcolepsy tend to sleep about the same number of hours per day as people without, but the quality of sleep tends to be lessened. Narcolepsy is a clinical syndrome of hypothalamic disorder, however, the exact cause of narcolepsy is unknown, with potentially several causes. The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is a database for the three-dimensional structural data of large biological molecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids. Thomas Kilduff
Thomas S. Kilduff is an American neuroscientist and the director of SRI International's Center for Neuroscience. He specializes in neurobiology related to sleep and wakefulness, and was involved in the discovery of orexin, hypocretin (also known as orexin), a neuropeptide system that is highly involved in wakefulness regulation. His group at SRI International also discovered an unusual neuronal population in the cerebral cortex that is activated during sleep. He is also a consulting professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. A protein precursor, also called a pro-protein or pro-peptide, is an inactive protein (or peptide) that can be turned into an active form by post-translational modification, such as breaking off a piece of the molecule or adding on another molecule. The name of the precursor for a protein is often prefixed by ''pro-''. Examples include proinsulin and proopiomelanocortin, which are both prohormones. The GenBank sequence database is an open access, annotated collection of all publicly available nucleotide sequences and their protein translations.
