Bertram Orth (December 11, 1848 – February 10, 1931) was a German-born Canadian prelate of the Catholic Church. He led the Diocese of Victoria from 1900 to 1908, becoming its first and only archbishop in 1903. Biography Early life Bertram Orth was born on December 11, 1848 in the Algert district of Lohmar, near Cologne, to Johannes Wilhelm Orth and Anna Catharina Müller. He entered the American College of Louvain in 1868, studying to become a missionary priest for the Archdiocese of Oregon City. He was ordained to the priesthood on July 25, 1872 by Archbishop Giacomo Cattani, the Apostolic Nuncio to Belgium. Background Harold William Orth was born on a ship en route to the United States from Christiana (Oslo), Norway, on April 14, 1866. His exact date of arrival to the United States is unknown. Albert Lewis Orth (September 5, 1872 – October 8, 1948) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. He later served as a major league umpire and college baseball coach. Early life Orth was born in Sedalia, Missouri and attended DePauw University. Playing career As a young pitcher with the Lynchburg minor league team in the Virginia League in 1895, Orth won 28 games. He was called up to the Philadelphia Phillies and won his first eight starts for them. Heide Orth (''née'' Schildknecht; born 10 August 1942) is a former tennis player from Germany. Heide grew up in Essen in the industrial Ruhr valley and began playing tennis with her father at the age of 13. Her first major success was winning the West German Junior Championship in 1960. Johannes Orth (14 January 1847 – 13 January 1923 in Berlin) was a German pathologist born in Wallmerod. He studied medicine at the universities of Heidelberg, Würzburg and Bonn, receiving his habilitation in 1872 while an assistant to Eduard von Rindfleisch at Bonn. Afterwards, he served as an assistant under Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902) in Berlin. In 1878 he became a professor at the University of Göttingen, and in 1902, following the death of Virchow, he returned to Berlin as director of the clinic of pathology. Orth specialized in the pathological study of infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis and endocarditis.
