Northern Snake-necked Turtle
The northern snake-necked turtle or northern long-necked turtle (''Chelodina (Chelydera) rugosa'') is a species of turtle in the family Chelidae or Austro-South American Side-necked Turtles. It is native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea. The species was described in 1890 from material collected in Cape York of Queensland, Australia. The species has in recent years had several species of turtle synonymised with it, the distribution includes northern Australia, Indonesia and Pitcairn. As a member of the sub-family Pleurodira this species is a side-necked turtle and also a snake-necked strike and gape predator. This carnivorous turtle will consume fish, tadpoles, hatchling turtles, worms, crickets, etc. It is not an aggressive species with a biting defense. Individuals tend to flail to escape rather than bite. James Douglas Ogilby
James Douglas Ogilby (16 February 1853 – 11 August 1925) was an Australian ichthyologist and herpetologist. Ogilby was born in Belfast, Ireland, and was the son of zoologist William Ogilby and his wife Adelaide, née Douglas. He received his education at Winchester College, England, and Trinity College, Dublin. Ogilby worked for the British Museum before joining the Australian Museum in Sydney. After being let go for drunkenness in 1890, he picked up contract work before joining the Queensland Museum in Brisbane circa 1903. He was the author of numerous scientific papers on reptiles, and he described a new species of turtle and several new species of lizards. Chelodina Colliei
The oblong turtle (''Chelodina oblonga''), also known commonly as the narrow-breasted snake-necked turtle and the southwestern snake-necked turtle, is a species of turtle in the family Chelidae. The species is endemic to the southwestern part of Western Australia. The species has been successfully bred in captivity in Cologne Zoological Garden. While all turtles are popularly believed to be mute, the oblong turtle is known to have a wide range of vocalizations. Billabong ( ) is an Australian term for an oxbow lake, an isolated pond left behind after a river changes course. Billabongs are usually formed when the path of a creek or river changes, leaving the former branch with a dead end. As a result of the arid Australian climate in which these "dead rivers" are often found, billabongs fill with water seasonally but can be dry for a greater part of the year. The Pleurodira are one of the two living suborders of turtles, the other being the Cryptodira. The division between these two suborders represents a very deep evolutionary divide between two very different types of turtles.
