Narrow-headed Garter Snake
The narrow-headed garter snake, ''Thamnophis rufipunctatus'', is a species of garter snake, endemic to the southwestern United States and adjacent northwestern Mexico. Its common names also include narrowhead garter snake and narrowhead watersnake. Geographic range It is found in Arizona and New Mexico, and in the Mexican states of Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango. Habitat and behavior It is found near river banks or streams. It is one of the most aquatic of all garter snakes. Description The snake is blue-grey to olive-grey, or greenish to brown, and it has brown, orange, or black spots on the back. The total length of adults is (about 81–112 cm). It has eight or 9 upper labial scaless, one of which enters the eye, two or three preocular scales, two to four postoculars, and one anterior temporal scale. The Southern Durango spotted garter snake (''Thamnophis nigronuchalis'') is a species of snake of the Family (biology), family Colubridae. It is Endemism, endemic to the state of Durango, Mexico. Description This is a heavy-bodied, medium sized garter snake. It has an oval-shaped head with two supralabial scales, two Ocular scales, preocular scales, and a distinct black blotch on the dorsal surface of its neck. It has 149-165 ventral and 63-70 caudal scales. Ventral scales are heavily pigmented, often forming an irregular black stripe. The dorsal pattern consists of rufous-colored spots outlined in black in 5-10 rows, with no dorsal or lateral stripes.
