Nonet (music)
In music, a nonet is a composition which requires nine musicians for a performance, or a musical group that consists of nine people. The standard nonet scoring is for wind quintet, violin, viola, cello, and contrabass, though other combinations are also found. Classical nonets The first work to actually bear the title of nonet was Louis Spohr's Grand Nonetto in F major, op. 31 (1813), for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Earlier compositions, however, had been composed for nine instruments (Joseph Haydn's four ''Divertimenti'' (or '' Cassations''), for 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 violins, 2 violas, and contrabass, Hob. Quark Model
In particle physics, the quark model is a classification scheme for hadrons in terms of their valence quarks—the quarks and antiquarks which give rise to the quantum numbers of the hadrons. The quark model underlies "flavor SU(3)", or the Eightfold Way, the successful classification scheme organizing the large number of lighter hadrons that were being discovered starting in the 1950s and continuing through the 1960s. It received experimental verification beginning in the late 1960s and is a valid effective classification of them to date. The model was independently proposed by physicists Murray Gell-Mann, who dubbed them "quarks" in a concise paper, and George Zweig, who suggested "aces" in a longer manuscript. André Petermann also touched upon the central ideas from 1963 to 1965, without as much quantitative substantiation. Nonet (Farrenc)
The Nonet in E-flat major, Op. 38, is a 1849 composition by French composer Louise Farrenc. In line with the tradition established by Louis Spohr, it is scored for a combined string quartet and wind quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello, double bass. The double bass is sometimes replace by a contrabassoon. The manuscript, dated November 1849, is held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Farrenc also arranged the Nonet for string quintet. The work was not printed in Farrenc's lifetime. Composition and premiere Farrenc, a piano performer, composed mainly for solo piano and chamber music for ensembles with piano; the Nonet was her only chamber composition without a piano. Nonet (Villa-Lobos)
Nonet, subtitled "Impressão rápida de todo o Brasil" (A rapid impression of the whole of Brazil) is a chamber-music work (with mixed choir) by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, written in 1923. It is number W191 in the catalogue of works compiled by David Appleby. History Villa-Lobos began work on the Nonet in Rio de Janeiro in 1923, shortly before his first visit to Europe, and completed the score in Paris in September of the same year. It was premiered on 30 May 1924 at the Salle des Agriculteurs in Paris by an ensemble conducted by the composer. The score is dedicated to Olívia Guedes Penteado. The work marks a fundamental turning point in Villa-Lobos's style to the strongly Brazilian-nationalistic character that dominated his compositions throughout the rest of the 1920s, and in particular those to which he gave the title ''Chôros''. Nonet (Lachner)
Franz Lachner’s Nonet in F major is a composition for chamber ensemble published in 1875. Background The precise circumstances under which Lachner composed the Nonet are undocumented, leading to speculation on just when and for whom it was composed. De Alvaré in his thesis speculates that the Nonet was composed shortly after Lachner retired from conducting and that the intended recipients were not dissimilar to those for whom Beethoven composed the Septet Op. 20. Ussi in his article agrees with de Alvaré regarding the intended audience and performers, but disagrees with the dating of the composition, believing instead based purely on stylistic grounds that the piece may have been written in the 1820s or 1830s and then completed for publication in the 1870s. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (proton NMR, hydrogen-1 NMR, or 1H NMR) is the application of nuclear magnetic resonance in NMR spectroscopy with respect to hydrogen-1 nuclei within the molecules of a substance, in order to determine the structure of its molecules. In samples where natural hydrogen (H) is used, practically all the hydrogen consists of the isotope 1H (hydrogen-1; i.e. having a proton for a nucleus). Wind Nonet (Parry)
Hubert Parry's Nonet in B-flat major for nine wind instruments is a composition for chamber ensemble composed around 1877. Not performed in the composers lifetime, it remained unpublished until 1988 when Edition Compusic published the work under the posthumous opus number 70. Background The first mention of the composition is in a letter dating from Autumn of 1877 to Parrys then teacher Edward Dannreuther where he referred to the work as "..an experiment...". Parry showed the incomplete composition to Dannreuther on the 21st of December 1877, but did not complete the work until the 31st of December 1877. Dibble notes that Parry continued to work on the Nonet into February 1878, and suggests that the composer may have considered having members of the Crystal Palace Orchestra perform it.
