Model-based Systems Engineering
Model-based systems engineering (MBSE), according to the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), is the ''formalized application of modeling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification and validation activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development and later life cycle phases.'' MBSE is a technical approach to systems engineering that focuses on creating and exploiting domain models (aka Chocolate Factory Diagrams) as the primary means of information exchange, rather than on document-based information exchange. MBSE technical approaches are commonly applied to a wide range of industries with complex systems, such as aerospace, defense, rail, automotive, manufacturing, etc. History The first known prominent public usage of the term "Model-Based Systems Engineering" is a book by A. Wayne Wymore with the same name. The MBSE term was also commonly used among the SysML Partners consortium during the formative years ...

International Council On Systems Engineering
The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE; pronounced in-co-see) is a not-for-profit membership organization and professional society in the field of systems engineering. INCOSE has about 17000 members including individual members, corporate members and student members. INCOSE's main activities include its conferences, publications, local chapters, certifications and technical working groups. The INCOSE International Symposium is generally held in July in the United States or another country, and the INCOSE International Workshop is held in January in the United States. Currently, there are about 70 local INCOSE chapters globally with most chapters outside the United States representing entire countries, while chapters within the United States represent cities or regions. INCOSE organizes about 50 technical working groups with international membership, aimed at collaboration and the creation of INCOSE products, printed and online, in the field of Systems engin ...

Engineering Information Management
Engineering information management (EIM) is the business function within product development and specifically systems engineering that allows engineers to collaborate on a single source of truth of engineering data. Contrary to product data management (PDM) and product lifecycle management (PLM), its main purpose is not storage of CAD-related drawings and files, but rather the full execution of the V-model for hardware development, complementing and integrating to the above mentioned systems. Scope EIM systems enable collaboration on all important aspects of the engineering lifecycle, such as: * Requirements management * Functional design * Product architecture * Detailed systems design and simulation * Verification and validation * Documentation EIM systems implement the activities on both sides of the engineering V-model. Instead of being purely a data storage, it focuses also on the human interaction with the models and data, thus enabling concurrent engineering. EIM t ...

Unified Modeling Language
The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a general-purpose, developmental modeling language in the field of software engineering that is intended to provide a standard way to visualize the design of a system. The creation of UML was originally motivated by the desire to standardize the disparate notational systems and approaches to software design. It was developed at Rational Software in 1994–1995, with further development led by them through 1996. In 1997, UML was adopted as a standard by the Object Management Group (OMG), and has been managed by this organization ever since. In 2005, UML was also published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as an approved ISO standard. Since then the standard has been periodically revised to cover the latest revision of UML. In software engineering, most practitioners do not use UML, but instead produce informal hand drawn diagrams; these diagrams, however, often include elements from UML. History Before UML 1 ...

Systems Engineering
Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management that focuses on how to design, integrate, and manage complex systems over their enterprise life cycle, life cycles. At its core, systems engineering utilizes systems thinking principles to organize this body of knowledge. The individual outcome of such efforts, an engineered system, can be defined as a combination of components that work in synergy to collectively perform a useful Function (engineering), function. Issues such as requirements engineering, reliability, logistics, coordination of different teams, testing and evaluation, maintainability and many other Discipline (academia), disciplines necessary for successful system design, development, implementation, and ultimate decommission become more difficult when dealing with large or complex projects. Systems engineering deals with work-processes, optimization methods, and risk management tools in such projects. It overlaps technical ...

Object Process Methodology
Object Process Methodology (OPM) is a conceptual modeling language and methodology for capturing knowledge and designing systems, specified as ISO/ PAS 19450. Based on a minimal universal ontology of stateful objects and processes that transform them, OPM can be used to formally specify the function, structure, and behavior of artificial and natural systems in a large variety of domains. OPM was conceived and developed by Dov Dori. The ideas underlying OPM were published for the first time in 1995. Since then, OPM has evolved and developed. In 2002, the first book on OPM was published, and on December 15, 2015, after six years of work by ISO TC184/SC5, ISO adopted OPM as ISO/PAS 19450. A second book on OPM was published in 2016. Since 2019, OPM has become a foundation for a Professional Certificate program in Model-Based Systems Engineering - MBSat EdX Lectures are availablas web videos on Youtube Overview Object Process Methodology (OPM) is a conceptual modeling lan ...

Object Management Group
The Object Management Group (OMG) is a computer industry standardization, standards consortium. OMG Task Forces develop enterprise integration standards for a range of technologies. Business activities The goal of the OMG was a common portable and interoperable object model with methods and data that work using all types of development environments on all types of platforms. The group provides only specifications, not implementations. But before a specification can be accepted as a standard by the group, the members of the submitter team must guarantee that they will bring a conforming product to market within a year. This is an attempt to prevent unimplemented (and unimplementable) standards. Other private companies or open source groups are encouraged to produce conforming products and OMG is attempting to develop mechanisms to enforce true interoperability. OMG hosts four technical meetings per year for its members and interested nonmembers. The Technical Meetings provide ...

Model-driven Development
Model-driven engineering (MDE) is a software development methodology that focuses on creating and exploiting domain models, which are conceptual models of all the topics related to a specific problem. Hence, it highlights and aims at abstract representations of the knowledge and activities that govern a particular application domain, rather than the computing (i.e. algorithmic) concepts. Overview The MDE approach is meant to increase productivity by maximizing compatibility between systems (via reuse of standardized models), simplifying the process of design (via models of recurring design patterns in the application domain), and promoting communication between individuals and teams working on the system (via a standardization of the terminology and the best practices used in the application domain). For instance, in model-driven development, technical artifacts such as source code, documentation, tests, and more are generated algorithmically from a domain model. A modeling pa ...

List Of Requirements Engineering Tools
Requirements engineering tools are usually software products to ease the RE processes and allow for more systematic and formalized handling of requirements, change management and traceability. The PMI guide ''Requirements Management: A Practical Guide'' recommends that a requirements tool should be identified at the beginning of the project, as equirementstraceability can get complex and that switching tool mid-term could present a challenge. According to ISO/IEC TR 24766:2009, six major tool capabilities exist: # Requirements elicitation # Requirements analysis # Requirements specification # Requirements verification and validation # Requirements management # Other capabilities RE tool list As with most software, the vendor/owner, tool name or scope change over time. Note that compliance with, for example, safety standards such as ISO 26262 is supported by few tools directly or indirectly via specialist consulting. Unlike the major six tool capabilities (see above), the f ...
