Mocktails
A non-alcoholic mixed drink (also known as virgin cocktail, temperance drink, or mocktail) is a cocktail-style beverage made without alcoholic ingredients. Also called "zero proof" drinks, the non-alcoholic drink dates back to the earliest days of the cocktail age, appearing as 'Temperance drinks' in the first American cocktail books, including Jerry Thomas's Bar-Tenders Guide (1862). Merriam-Webster cites the first mention of 'mocktail' as appearing in 1916. While the name of the non-alcoholic drink, as well as its style, has evolved over time, it is often a reflection of cocktail culture at large. The 1980s saw the resurgence of a 'mocktail' movement with often sugary drinks. Following the sophistication of cocktail culture of the 2000s, the zero proof drink also became more refined. Shirley Temple (cocktail)
A Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic mixed drink traditionally made with ginger ale and a splash of grenadine, garnished with a maraschino cherry. Modern Shirley Temple recipes may substitute Lemon-lime drink, lemon-lime soda or lemonade and sometimes orange juice in part, or in whole. Shirley Temples are often served to children dining with adults in lieu of real cocktails, as are the similar Roy Rogers (drink), Roy Rogers and Arnold Palmer (drink), Arnold Palmer. The cocktail may have been invented by a bartender at Chasen's, a restaurant in West Hollywood, California, to serve then-child actress Shirley Temple. A Tortuga cocktail is a non-alcoholic beverage named for the Haitian island Tortuga of northern Hispaniola that was used by pirates as launching ground for piracy activities. Lemon, Lime And Bitters
Lemon, lime and bitters (LLB) is a mixed drink made with (clear) lemonade (Sprite etc.), lime cordial, and Angostura bitters. The lemonade is sometimes substituted with soda water or lemon squash, which is more akin to what is called "lemonade" in North America. Angostura LLB is also now available as a beverage in a can. This is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and elsewhere throughout the Caribbean, where the beverage's popularity has increased since its introduction in the region in the mid 2010s. A Roy Rogers is a non-alcoholic mixed drink made with cola and grenadine syrup, and traditionally garnished with a maraschino cherry.
