Milonga (music)
Precursor to tango, milonga is a musical genre that originated in the Río de la Plata areas of Argentina, Uruguay and the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. "Milonga is an excited habanera." The original habanera divided into four pulses, in a standard two-four where every note was stressed. In becoming milonga, though, all four notes turned strong, as tempo was doubled. The strength of the first beat weakened the fourth giving an almost waltz-like feel to milonga: one-two-three (four), one-two-three (four). Habanera is a slower, more explicit sounding ''one'', two, ''three''-four. At least one modern tango pianist believes the polka influenced the speeding up of the milonga. Over time, dance steps and other musical influences were added, eventually contributing to the creation of tango. Los Moonlights
Los Moonlights is a rock band from Montevideo, Uruguay. Their debut album, ''Moonlights'', was their greatest commercial success. Formed in the 1960s, Los Moonlights disbanded in 1977. They reunited in 2015. History Formed at the end the 1960s and fronted by the Iriarte brothers, Los Moonlights began by playing live covers. With the arrival of longtime members Gastón "Dino" Ciarlo and Yamandu Pérez, they began writing original material. After recording a few singles for the Clave label, Los Moonlights signed with De La Planta. They recorded their debut album, which contains songs such as "Vamos dulce muchacha" and "Milonga de pelo largo". They mainly played shows in small local establishments. Carlos Di Sarli
Carlos Di Sarli (January 7, 1903January 12, 1960) was an Argentine tango musician, orchestra leader, composer and pianist. Early years Carlos di Sarli was born at 511 Buenos Aires street (now Yrigoyen) in the city of Bahía Blanca, located in Southern Argentina. He was the eighth child of the Italian immigrant Miguel Di Sarli, the owner of a gunsmith store, and Serafina Russomano, daughter of the tenor singer Tito Russomano. Baptized as Cayetano di Sarli in accordance with the solid Catholic tradition of his parents, he later changed his name to Carlos. Music played an important role in the family: Carlos' older brother Domingo was a teacher at the Williams music conservatory in Bahía Blanca, Nicolas, another older child, became a famous baritone, and Carlos' younger brother, Roque, turned into a pianist. Astor Piazzolla
Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla (, ; March 11, 1921 – July 4, 1992) was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player, and arranger. His works revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed ''nuevo tango'', incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. In 1992, American music critic Stephen Holden described Piazzolla as "the world's foremost composer of Tango music". Francisco Juan Lomuto (November 24, 1893 – December 23, 1950) was an Argentine Tango pianist, leader and composer who occasionally went by the pseudonym:, "Pancho Laguna". Alfredo Zitarrosa
Alfredo Zitarrosa (March 10, 1936 – January 17, 1989) was a Uruguayan singer-songwriter, poet and journalist. He specialized in Uruguayan and Argentinean folk genres such as zamba and milonga, and he became a chief figure in the ''nueva canción'' movement in his country. A staunch supporter of Communist ideals, he lived in exile between 1976 and 1984. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential singer-songwriters of Latin America. Mariano Mores
Mariano Alberto Martínez (18 February 1918 13 April 2016), known professionally as Mariano Mores, was an Argentine tango composer and pianist. Biography Mariano Martínez was born in the San Telmo section of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1918. When he was a child, he played classical music on the piano very well. He made his professional debut at the age of 14 at Café Vicente on Corrientes Avenue. Mores took classical music lessons at the D´Andrea conservatoire in Lanús. After a brief spell with the folk group "La Cuyanita," he was hired as conductor and pianist with Roberto Firpo's orchestra. He created the Trio Mores with the sisters Margot and Myrna Mores and began composing music. He will later marry Myrna and adopt her artistic surname as his own.
