Johan Zulch De Villiers
Johan Zulch de Villiers (12 July 1845 – 18 July 1910) was a South African politician and attorney. He was mayor of Johannesburg from 1897 to 1900. Life Johan Zulch de Villiers was born in 1845 in Paarl, Cape Colony. He was educated at the Paarl gymnasium as well as privately by Dr. Rose Innes at Cape Town. For fifteen months he joined the Orange Free State forces in the Basuto Gun War. He passed as an attorney and was an advocate of the High Court. He then entered civil service becoming the private secretary to President Johannes Brand. Between 1881 and 1897 de Villiers was the landdrost of several towns including Pretoria, Barberton and Lydenburg. He also worked in Swaziland. The government appointed him as the first mayor ( nl, burgemeester) of Johannesburg on 1 October 1897. The first meeting of the town council was held on 4 October 1897. Herman Samtseu Philip Mashaba (born August 26, 1959) is a South African politician, entrepreneur and the current president of ActionSA, a party he launched on 29 August 2020. He served as the Mayor of Johannesburg from 2016 to 2019. He is the founder of the hair product company Black Like Me. He is famous in South Africa for his background: he grew up struggling against poverty and the apartheid government to open his own hair business, which became the biggest hair brand in South Africa, making him a millionaire. Sello Enoch Dada Morero is a South African politician who served as the Mayor of Johannesburg since 30 September 2022 until 25 October 2022. His term of office has been for 25 days. Morero is the regional chairperson of the African National Congress in Johannesburg. Political career Morero is a former COSAS (Congress of the South African Students' Congress) student leader. Mpho Phalatse
Mpho Phalatse (born 7 November 1977) is a South African medical doctor and politician who is the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she has served in the position since 22 November 2021. She is the first woman to serve as mayor of the metropolitan municipality, which was established in 2000. She is the first black woman to serve as mayor of the city of Johannesburg and only the second female mayor of the city after Jessie McPherson, who served from 1945 to 1946. Mpho Moerane (16 February 1969 – 18 May 2022) was a South African electrician, businessman and politician who was the mayor of Johannesburg between October and November 2021. A member of the African National Congress, he previously served as the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for environment and infrastructure services from December 2019 to September 2021. Jolidee Matongo (1974 – 18 September 2021) was a South African politician who served as the mayor of Johannesburg from 10 August 2021 until his death on 18 September 2021. Prior to his election as mayor, he served as the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for finance under his predecessor, Geoff Makhubo, who died from COVID-19 complications. Geoff Makhubo
Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo (8 February 1968 – 9 July 2021) was a South African politician who served as the Mayor of Johannesburg from December 2019 until his death from COVID-19 in July 2021. He was a member of the African National Congress and the party's regional chair. During the administration of Parks Tau, he served as the MMC (Member of the Mayoral Committee) for Finance. Mpho Franklyn Parks Tau (born 1970) is a South African politician who has been a Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs since March 2023 and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since February 2023, representing the African National Congress. Nkosiyakhe Amos Masondo (born 21 April 1953 in Louwsburg) is a South African politician, who has served as the Chairperson of South Africa's National Council of Provinces since 23 May 2019. Isaac Mogase
Isaac Mogase (25 January 1934 – 27 April 2021) was the first post-apartheid mayor of Johannesburg. An anti-apartheid activist, he joined the ANC Youth League in the 1950s and was one of the leaders of the Soweto Crisis Committee in the 1980s.
