Maihar Gharana
The Maihar Gharana or Maihar-Senia Gharana is a gharana or school of Hindustani classical music, a style of Indian classical music originating in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent. The school was formed by Allaudin Khan in the princely state of Maihar, now in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, and hence the name. Allauddin Khan learnt music from Vina player Wazir Khan, an exponent of the Senia gharana. The Maihar gharana is therefore sometimes referred to as the ''Maihar-Senia gharana''. It is one of the most prominent gharanas of the 20th century; much of the fame of Hindustani classical music in the west stems from this gharana. Gharana
In Hindustani music (North Indian classical music), a ''gharānā'' is a system of social organisation in the Indian subcontinent, linking musicians or dancers by lineage or apprenticeship, and more importantly by adherence to a particular musical style. The word gharana comes from the Hindi word 'ghar' which is derived from the Sanskrit word ''Griha'', which means 'house'. It typically refers to the place where the musical ideology originated; for example, some of the gharanas well known for singing khyals are: Dilli(Delhi), Agra, Gwalior, Indore, Atrauli-Jaipur, Kirana and Patiala. Four famous kathak gharanas are: Lucknow, Atrauli-Jaipur, Benares and Raigarh. Vasant Rai
Vasant Rai (1942–1985) was one of the world's most acclaimed masters of Indian music and played the Indo-Afghan instrument the sarod. Personal life and education Rai's family was from a small town in India called Unjha and he was born in Paris, France. Rai was the last student of Baba Allauddin Khan, who is best known as the teacher of Ravi Shankar. He died in his New York apartment shortly after a Carnegie Hall performance. Career Rai had been visiting the United States since his teen years. He settled in New York City in 1969 and lived mainly in the Greenwich Village area and also for a short time at the Chelsea Hotel when he was not touring. From 1969 to 1985, he conducted the Alam School of Music in Greenwich Village. Alla Rakha, Mahapurush Mishra, Shamta Prasad and Zakir Hussain usually accompanied him on the tabla. Abhisheka () means "bathing of the divinity to whom worship is offered." It is a religious rite or method of prayer in which a devotee pours a liquid offering on an image or murti of a God or Goddess. Abhisheka is common to Indian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Hinduism An abhiṣeka is conducted by priests by bathing the image of the deity being worshipped, amidst the chanting of mantras. Jyotin Bhattacharya
Jotin Bhattacharya ( hi, ज्योतिन भट्टाचार्य) was an Indian classical sarod player. Jyotin was a disciple of Allauddin Khan. Early life and education Bhattacharya was born in 1926 in Varanasi in a Bengali family. He attended C.M. Anglo Bengali College and subsequently attained bachelor's, master's and MPhil degrees from the Benaras Hindu University before starting his eight-year music training from Allauddin Khan. During his training under Allauddin Khan, Bhattacharya also served him as a secretary and handled all his correspondences. Bhattacharya performed at the Baba Allauddin Khan Music Foundation in the Poorva Sanskritik Kendra, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi. Vikash Maharaj
Pandit Vikash Maharaj (born 1 July 1957) is an Indian sarod player. In his childhood, he initially learnt to play the tabla and then discovered and studied the sarod as his preferred instrument. Early life and background Vikash was born in Varanasi in 1957 into a family of musicians(Banaras Gharana). He was instructed on the sarod by Rajesh Chandra Moitra of the school of Indian classical Maihar gharana. His formal schooling was complemented by lessons from his family including his uncle Kishan Maharaj. Music Vikash performs Indian classical music, jazz and crossover between Indian music and Jazz. He tours and participates in international crossover festivals such as the WOMAD, the Diwali festival in New Zealand or the International Leprosy Eradication Festival. Apratim Majumdar (born 1978), is an Indian classical sarod player from Kolkata, India. His style is the "Dhrupadiya Veenkar" style of Alauddin Khan's Seni Beenkar Gharana. Tutelage He was tutored by Rabin Ghosh, disciple of Alauddin Khan, for over nineteen years. Apratim also received training for a period of three years from Partho Sarothy, disciple of Dhyanesh Khan and Ravi Shankar. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar
Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar (born 17 May 1961) is an Indian sarod player and pupil of Bahadur Khan. Majumdar is one of the most popular and celebrated modern sarod players. Training He started his music training under his grandfather Bibhuti Ranjan Majumdar with mandolin. He also received vocal and tabla training under Amaresh Chowdhury and Anil Palit. Later he trained under Bahadur Khan for 18 years until the latter died. He then continued training under Ajay Sinha Roy and Ali Akbar Khan. Duets He has played duets with Shujaat Khan. Rajeev Taranath
Rajeev Taranath (born 17 October 1932) is an Indian classical musician who plays the sarod. Taranath is a disciple of Ali Akbar Khan. Career Rajeev Taranath was born in Bangalore on 17 October 1932. He received his initial training in vocal music from his father Pandit Taranath. He gave his first public vocal performance when he was nine years old. Rajeev was singing for the All India Radio before he was twenty. Although Rajeev held a PhD in literature, he decided to give up his career as a Professor and Head of English Literature at Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli (REC-T), which was later renamed as National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T), and then went to Calcutta, where he began his musical training under the tutelage of Ali Akbar Khan.
