Moulting is the manner in which an animal routinely casts off a part of its body (usually an outer layer or covering). Moulting
In biology, moulting (British English), or molting (American English), also known as sloughing, shedding, or in many invertebrates, ecdysis, is the manner in which an animal routinely casts off a part of its body (often, but not always, an outer layer or covering), either at specific times of the year, or at specific points in its life cycle. In medieval times it was also known as "mewing" (from the French verb "muer", to moult), a term that lives on in the name of Britain's Royal Mews where the King's hawks used to be kept during moulting time before becoming horse stables after Tudor times. Moulting can involve shedding the Epidermis (skin), epidermis (skin), pelage (hair, feathers, fur, wool), or other external layer. In some groups, other body parts may be shed, for example, the entire exoskeleton in arthropods, including the wings in some insects. Louis Moult
Louis Elliot Moult (born 14 May 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for Motherwell, on loan from Burton Albion. Moult, a prolific goal scorer in Stoke City's academy and reserve side, appeared in a Premier League game in March 2010. After this Moult struggled to gain a place in the Stoke squad and was sent out on loan to Bradford City, Mansfield Town, Accrington Stanley and to Mansfield for a second time. He was released by Stoke in June 2012 and signed for Northampton Town. He subsequently played non-league football for Nuneaton Town and Wrexham, before moving to Scottish club Motherwell in 2015. He would then join Preston North End and Burton Albion before returning to Motherwell in September 2022. He is known for his annual anthologies ''Best Poems of the Year'', 1922 to 1943, which were popular verse selections taken from periodicals on both sides of the Atlantic. Edward Walker Moult (11 February 1926 – 3 September 1986) was a British farmer at Scaddows Farm near Ticknall, Derbyshire, who became a radio and television personality. Early life Moult was born in Derby. He left Derby School at 17 in 1944 but, by 22, had his first dairy farm in Sinfin, on the outskirts of the city. Daniel Moult (born 1973) is a concert organist, educator and animateur, ensemble player and presenter of films about music. Education Daniel Moult was born in Manchester. He attended Manchester Grammar School and St John's College, Oxford, where he was organ scholar. Ecdysis
Ecdysis is the moulting of the cuticle in many invertebrates of the clade Ecdysozoa. Since the cuticle of these animals typically forms a largely inelastic exoskeleton, it is shed during growth and a new, larger covering is formed. The remnants of the old, empty exoskeleton are called exuviae. After moulting, an arthropod is described as ''teneral'', a ''callow''; it is "fresh", pale and soft-bodied. Within one or two hours, the cuticle hardens and darkens following a tanning process analogous to the production of leather. During this short phase the animal expands, since growth is otherwise constrained by the rigidity of the exoskeleton. Growth of the limbs and other parts normally covered by the hard exoskeleton is achieved by transfer of body fluids from soft parts before the new skin hardens. Theodore Frederic Molt (originally Johann Friedrich Molt; 13 February 1795 – 16 November 1856) was a German-born music teacher, composer and organist in Canada. He published several works on teaching methods in music. Life Molt was born in Gschwend, near Stuttgart, the son of a Lutheran organist. Soon after entering university he was conscripted into Napoleon's army, and served as assistant paymaster. Moulton B. "Molt" Taylor (September 29, 1912 – November 16, 1995) was an American aeronautical engineer famed for his work designing, developing, and manufacturing on a small scale one of the first practical flying cars, the Aerocar. Life and career Taylor was born in Portland, Oregon and studied engineering at the University of Washington. After graduation, he was accepted into the United States Navy as a pilot during World War II, and spent much of the war working on the Navy's Gorgon missile program, for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit medal. Shortly after the war, he designed his first flying car, the Aerocar, and founded Aerocar International in Longview, Washington, to develop, manufacture and market the aircraft.
