Mayor Of Nelson
The mayor of Nelson is the head of the municipal government of Nelson, New Zealand, and presides over the Nelson City Council. The mayor is directly elected using a single transferable vote electoral system. The current mayor is Nick Smith, who was elected in September 2022. History 1874–1899 Joseph Dodson was elected as the first mayor of Nelson on 1 May 1874 by the city councillors under the Municipal Corporations Act 1867. He was unanimously elected to the position. Dodson was a former member of the Nelson Board of Works. Councillor Fell noted that Dodson had taken great interest in the welfare of Nelson and was an upright gentleman with integrity. The new council came into immediate conflict with the provincial government over finances. Nelson went bankrupt, the mayor resigned on 8 January 1875, and so did most of the councillors. Nick Smith (New Zealand Politician)
Nicolas Rex Smith (born 24 December 1964) is a New Zealand politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the National Party. Smith represented the Nelson electorate from 1996 to 2020 and, before that, was the member for Tasman from 1990 to 1996. During his career, Smith served as a Cabinet minister, holding various posts including Minister for Building and Housing, Minister for the Environment, Minister for Climate Change Issues, and Minister of Local Government. For a brief time between October and November 2003 he was the deputy leader of the National Party, then in opposition under Don Brash. Following his defeat in the Nelson electorate in the 2020 election, he served as a list MP for less than a year before retiring from politics in 2021 after multiple allegations of bullying were made against him. Henry Baigent
Henry Baigent (1844 – 31 August 1929) was a timber miller, and served as a city councillor and mayor of Nelson, New Zealand. He founded the Nelson firm of H Baigent and Sons Ltd. His funeral was noted as one of the largest that had ever taken place in Nelson. Family Henry Baigent was the son of Edward and Mary Ann Baigent (née Hern). His parents had come out to Nelson from Windlesham, Surrey, England in 1842 on the ''Clifford''. His brother Joseph was born three days after his parents' arrival in the colony and Joseph was only the seventh child to be born in Nelson. His father was a member of the Provincial Council throughout its existence, and afterwards in the House of Representatives. Baigent was married twice, firstly to Margaret Inglis Wallace in 1866, who died in 1880. Trevor Horne (New Zealand Politician)
Trevor Freeman Horne (30 September 1920 – 3 July 1991) was a New Zealand politician. He served as mayor of Nelson from 1968 to 1971. Early life and family Horne was born in Christchurch. He was the son of Freeman Horne and Mable Smith. He was educated at Gisborne Boys' High School. In 1951 he married Ngaire Johnston and they had two children, a boy and a girl. Career He began work in 1935 as a clerk with a public accountant, joined the Farmers Co-op in 1936, and in 1937 became an apprentice cabinet maker. After the Second World War he formed his own tourism business and was a director of Tourist Services Limited. Douglas Strawbridge
Douglas Nelson Strawbridge (21 October 1908 – 6 December 1979) served as Mayor of Nelson, New Zealand from 1962 to 1968. Strawbridge was born, the son of Charles James Strawbridge and Martha Annie Strawbridge. He attended Nelson College in 1923 and became a building contractor. Stanley Russell
Stanley Ivan Russell (26 March 1906 – 29 November 2005) was a New Zealand local-body politician. He served as Mayor of Nelson from 1956 to 1962. Early life and family Russell was born in Christchurch, the son of George Philip Russell. His family moved to the King Country, then Motueka and Tākaka before settling in Nelson in 1919. Edgar Neale
Edgar Rollo Neale (24 November 1889 – 25 July 1960), often called Gar Neale, was Mayor and Member of Parliament for Nelson, New Zealand, a strong supporter of the Nelson railway, and a representative cricketer. George Page (mayor)
George Lloyd Page (31 March 1878 – 8 November 1972) was Mayor of Nelson, New Zealand from 1935 to 1941. Private life and professional career Page was born in Bilston, Staffordshire, England on 31 March 1878 and his family migrated to New Zealand in 1879. His father was also named George. Page attended Hampton Street Primary School, Nelson. He also played in the Nelson Garrison Band under Herr Gustav Handke and was noted as a fine musician. Walter Moffatt
Walter John Moffatt (5 October 1866 – 14 May 1938) was a local-body politician in New Zealand. He was Mayor of Nelson from 1927 to 1935. Early life and family The son of Harry Louis Moffatt, wharfinger at Motueka, Moffatt was a coachbuilder by trade having served his time in Nelson and Motueka. William Wallace Snodgrass (1870 – 20 March 1939) was an English-born politician from Nelson, New Zealand. William Lock
William Lock (1 May 1858 – 20 July 1940) was Mayor of Nelson, New Zealand, from 1913 to 1915 and again from 1921 to 1927. Lock was an auctioneer, and a grain and produce merchant for 40 years.
