This is a list of mayors of Edmonton, a city in Alberta, Canada. Edmonton was incorporated as a town on January 9, 1892, with Matthew McCauley acclaimed as its first mayor during the town's first election, held February 10, 1892. On October 8, 1904, Edmonton became a city during the tenure of Mayor William Short. Edmonton was part of the North-West Territories until September 1, 1905, when it became the capital of the newly created province of Alberta, during the tenure of Mayor Kenneth W. MacKenzie. The longest serving mayor is William Hawrelak, who was elected as mayor seven times, serving for a total of 10 years 4 months over three periods: four consecutive terms starting 1951, resigned in 1959 during last month of fourth term; two consecutive terms starting 1963, expelled by the courts in 1964; one term starting in 1974, died in office in 1975. Amarjeet Sohi
Amarjeet Sohi (born March 8, 1964) is a Canadian politician serving as the 36th and current List of mayors of Edmonton, mayor of Edmonton since October 26, 2021. Sohi previously sat as a Member of Parliament (Canada), member of Parliament (MP) and served in the federal Cabinet of Canada, Cabinet from 2015 to 2018 as the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, minister of infrastructure and communities, and from 2018 to 2019 as the Minister of Natural Resources, minister of natural resources. William Thomas Henry
William Thomas Henry (January 2, 1871 – March 12, 1952) was a politician, real estate agent and businessman in Alberta, Canada. He served numerous years on Edmonton City Council as an Alderman from 1900 to 1902 and later as mayor from 1914 to 1917. He also served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1924 to 1926 sitting with the Liberal caucus. Early life Henry was born in Prince Edward Island January 2, 1872. He moved to Calgary, Alberta, in 1890 and entered the dry goods business. Three years later, he moved to Edmonton and opened W. T. Henry and Co., Clothing, Boots and Shoes which outfitted parties going to the Klondike Gold Rush. Wetaskiwin
Wetaskiwin ( ) is a city in the province of Alberta, Canada. The city is located south of the provincial capital of Edmonton. The city name comes from the Cree word ''wītaskiwinihk'', meaning "the hills where peace was made". George Seale Armstrong
George Seale Armstrong (May 16, 1867 – June 9, 1947) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He served on the Edmonton City Council from 1907 to 1910 and as Mayor of Edmonton from 1910 to 1912. Armstrong was born in what would soon become the province of Ontario in 1867. After briefly teaching school, he entered the business industry, as a druggist. After initially gaining experience in politics on the council of Eastnor Township, he relocated west to the city of Edmonton, Alberta. In Edmonton, he established his pharmaceutical business once again and worked briefly with his brother on real estate and construction projects. In 1907, he ran for election to the Edmonton City Council and was elected to a two-year term. William Griesbach
Major General William Antrobus Griesbach, (January 3, 1878 – January 21, 1945) was a Canadian politician, decorated soldier, mayor of Edmonton, and member of the House of Commons and of the Senate. Early life Griesbach was born in Fort Qu'Appelle, North-West Territories, the son of Henry Arthur Griesbach, a North-West Mounted Police officer. Henry was on the NWMP's famous 1874 March West, finishing the march in Edmonton. In 1883, Henry was transferred to command Fort Saskatchewan; the family travelled on the Canadian Pacific Railway to Calgary and then by wagon train to Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, on occasion having to build or repair bridges in order to cross rivers. William Edmiston
William Somerville Edmiston (November 10, 1857 – July 24, 1903) was an architect and politician in present-day Alberta, Canada. He was a member of the Edmonton Town Council and for two terms, the mayor of Edmonton. Originally a native of Scotland, Edmiston came to Canada to settle in Clover Bar, Northwest Territories in the early 1880s. After living there for about ten years, he relocated to nearby Edmonton where he would employ himself as an architect, the first ever in the town. Engaging in a partnership with another fellow architect, his firm would design some of the first buildings in the newly developing town.
