Benson John Lossing
Benson John Lossing (February 12, 1813 – June 3, 1891) was a prolific and popular American historian, known best for his illustrated books on the American Revolution and American Civil War and features in ''Harper's Magazine''. He was a charter trustee of Vassar College. Early life Lossing was born February 12, 1813 in Beekman, New York. His father John was descended of old Dutch stock, originally surnamed Lassing or Lassingh, who had been among the earliest settlers of the Hudson Valley. His mother, Miriam Dorland Lossing was a Quakers, Quaker. His formal education was curtailed when he was orphaned in 1824. Soon thereafter, he moved to Poughkeepsie (town), New York, Poughkeepsie to serve as apprentice to Adam Henderson, clock and watchmaker and silversmith. Frederick Pettit Lossing (1915-1998) was a Canadian chemist at the National Research Council in Ottawa.The Encyclopedia of Mass Spectrometry: Volume 9: Historical Perspectives, Part B: Notable People in Mass Spectrometry He was a prolific scientist and is mainly known for his contributions to mass spectrometry, the Fred P. Lossing Award awarded by the Canadian Society for Mass Spectrometry is named after him. Lossing was born in Norwich and studied at the University of Western Ontario and obtained a PhD from McGill University in 1942.
