Contract Bridge
Contract bridge, or simply bridge, is a trick-taking card game using a standard 52-card deck. In its basic format, it is played by four players in two competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. Millions of people play bridge worldwide in clubs, tournaments, online and with friends at home, making it one of the world's most popular card games, particularly among seniors. The World Bridge Federation (WBF) is the governing body for international competitive bridge, with numerous other bodies governing it at the regional level. The game consists of a number of , each progressing through four phases. The cards are dealt to the players; then the players ''call'' (or ''bid'') in an auction seeking to take the , specifying how many tricks the partnership receiving the contract (the declaring side) needs to take to receive points for the deal. During the auction, partners use their bids to also exchange information about their hands, including o ...

Lionel Convention
Lionel is a contract bridge bidding convention used in defense against an opposing 1NT openings. Using Lionel, over a 1NT opening of the opponents: :* a double is conventional and denotes spades and a lower suit (4-4 or longer), :* a 2/2 overcall denotes hearts and the suit bid (4-4 or longer), and :* a 2/2 overcalls is natural. Any of the overcalls denote high-card strength corresponding to 12+ (or good 11) high card points. The convention is named after Lionel Wright from New Zealand who published it in the International Popular Bridge Monthly magazine of May 1993. Responses Following the Lionel double, the partner of the double responds as follows: (1NT) - dbl - (pass) - ?? :pass = 10+ hcp, all subsequent doubles for penalty :2 = pass-or-correct bid (doubler to pass or bid second suit) :2 = Non- forcing, diamond length (typically 5+) with heart tolerance. Doubler can bid 2 with hearts as second suit and less than two diamonds. :2 = Natural, non- forcing :2 = Weak Raise :2 ...

Landy Convention
Landy, named after its inventor Alvin Landy, is the first of several conventional defenses created to compete against an opponent's one notrump (1NT) opening. Landy is a 2 overcall of the opponents' 1NT opening to show at least four cards in each of the major suits; all other bids are natural. Requirements for the overcall vary from partnership to partnership: some require 5-5, some 5-4, and yet others only 4-4 (provided the overall strength is sufficient). The partner can take a preference to either major or make a non-forcing bid of a suit; 2NT is used as a forcing query. Extended Landy An extension was proposed by Ira Rubin in 1947 using 2 as a takeout request after a response or rebid of 1NT after a suit opening. It implies more distribution and less strength than a double. It also applies in the passout seat. Based on his initial inability to overcall the 1 opening directly, the bid of 2 by North shows five or more clubs and exactly four hearts. Similar uses were develop ...

Hello Convention
Hello is a bridge convention used for intervention over an opponent's 1NT opening. It allows for all one- and two-suited hands to be shown, and - for one suited hands - retains the ability to transfer. History The name of the convention is derived from the names two of its inventors, Jerry Helms and Bill Lohmann. Jerry Helms had previously co-developed "Helms", similar to the Cappelletti convention and saw this as an improvement to that convention. Helms considered that using 2 to show a major used up no bidding space and therefore lost the preemptive value typically attached to bidding major suits. Description It features the following calls: *Double is for penalty *2 shows diamonds or a major-minor two suiter. Responder transfers to 2 which is either passed or advanced (diamond suit) or a major is bid (2 suiter, unspecified minor) *2 is a transfer to hearts *2 shows both majors (responder may pass or correct to 2) *2 shows spades (natural bid) *2NT is a transfer to clubs *3 s ...
