Wakefield Trinity
Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, that plays in the Super League. One of the original twenty-two clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, between 1999 and 2016 the club was known as Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. The club has played at Belle Vue Stadium in Wakefield since 1895 and has rivalries with Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers. Wakefield have been league champions twice in their history when they went back to back in 1967 and 1968. As of 2021, it has been 53 years since Wakefield last won the league. History Early years Wakefield Trinity was founded by a group of men from the Holy Trinity Church in 1873. 1945–46 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1945–46 Rugby Football League season was the 51st season of rugby league football. Season summary Wigan won their fifth Championship when they defeated Huddersfield 13-4 in the play-off final. They had also finished the regular season as the league leaders. The Challenge Cup Winners were Wakefield Trinity who defeated Wigan 13-12 in the final. Bramley, Broughton Rangers, Hull Kingston Rovers, Liverpool Stanley, Rochdale Hornets, Salford, Swinton, Warrington and Widnes returned following the Second World War. Workington Town also entered a team for the first time. Jim Sullivan of Wigan ended his career this season as the all-time record scorer of goals with 2,867. Wigan won the Lancashire League, and Wakefield Trinity won the Yorkshire League. 1903–04 Northern Rugby Football Union Season
The 1903–04 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the ninth season of rugby league football. Season summary The League Champions were Bradford and the Challenge Cup Winners were Halifax. Keighley and Huddersfield were demoted from the top division and replaced by Wakefield Trinity (champions) and St. Helens. As the top two teams had finished level on points and Points Difference had not been introduced as a tie breaker yet, despite having a worse points difference, Bradford contested a play-off with Salford, that Bradford won 5-0. In the Second Division, Manningham and Stockport were replaced by Pontefract, reducing the competition to 17 teams. Birkenhead Wanderers dropped the Wanderers from their name. The second promotion place had to be decided by a play-off as Points Difference had not yet been introduced as a tie breaker. St. Helens beat Holbeck 7-0. 1955–56 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1955–56 Rugby Football League season was the leagues's 61st season. Season summary Belle Vue Rangers dropped out of the competition shortly before the start of the season. There was no time to reschedule and so percentages were used. In 1955-56 Wigan took part in the Independent Television Association Trophy. This was a series of televised floodlit matches played in London and shown on the newly launched ITV. It only lasted one year but the idea would be picked up again by the BBC in 1965. ITV Floodlit Competition winners were Warrington who beat Leigh 43-18 in the final. Hull F.C. won their fourth Rugby Football League Championship when they beat Halifax 10-9 in the play-off final. 1922–23 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1922–23 Rugby Football League season was the 28th season of rugby league football. Season summary Pre-season the Northern Rugby Football Union decided to drop the 'Union' in favour of 'League' and the first annual conference of the League is held at Keswick. Hull Kingston Rovers moved from their Craven Street ground to Craven Park at the eastern end of Holderness Road this season. Their first game against Wakefield Trinity on 2 September ended in a 3-0 defeat. Wigan Highfield joined the League. Hull Kingston Rovers won their first ever Championship when they defeated Huddersfield 15-5 in the play-off final. The 1956–57 Rugby Football League season was the 62nd season of rugby league football. Season summary Oldham finished the regular season as the league leaders and then won their fourth Rugby Football League Championship when they beat Hull F.C. 15-14 in the play-off final. The Challenge Cup winners were Leeds who beat Barrow 9-7 in the final. Oldham won the Lancashire League, and Leeds won the Yorkshire League. Oldham beat St. Helens 10–3 to win the Lancashire County Cup, and Wakefield Trinity beat Hunslet 23–5 to win the Yorkshire County Cup. Sixteen English clubs competed for the Northern Rugby Football League Championship with Widnes claiming the title by finishing the season on top of the League. The 1897–98 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the fourth season of rugby league football. Season summary The Lancashire Senior Competition was won by Broughton Rangers and the Yorkshire Senior Competition by Batley. Lancashire Senior Competition Although participating in the Lancashire Senior Competition, Runcorn and Stockport were from Cheshire. Champions Broughton Rangers beat a team representing the rest of the Lancashire competition 5–3 in an end of season finale on 22 April 1899. 1939–40 Northern Rugby Football League Wartime Emergency League Season
The 1939–40 Northern Rugby Football League season was an emergency season of English rugby league fixtures necessitated by the outbreak of the Second World War. The regular league season had started at the end of August 1939, but on the outbreak of war all sport was suspended. When government permission for sport to be resumed was given, the league was reorganised into two regional competitions, Yorkshire and Lancashire. The winners of each league playing against each other to decide the overall champions. The Yorkshire competition was won by Bradford Northern who beat Swinton, winners of the Lancashire competition, in the two-legged league final. The season also saw the resumption of County Cup competition, as well as some representative matches arranged to raise funds for the British Red Cross. Super League XII
Engage Super League XII is the official name for the year 2007's Super League season in the sport of rugby league. The 2007 season kicked off on the weekend of 2 February 2007 at the Galpharm Stadium. For the first time, the league had a staggered start due to the World Club Challenge between St. Helens and Brisbane Broncos. The first round of matches began on the weekend of 9 to 11 February 2007. St. Helens were defending Super League champions and Challenge Cup holders. Hull Kingston Rovers played in the Super League for the first time ever after being promoted from National League 1 in 2006. This season also included the first Millennium Magic weekend, which took place on the weekend of 5 and 6 May 2007 in Cardiff. Super League IX
Tetley's Super League IX was the name of the 2004 Super League championship season due to sponsorship by Tetley's Bitter. This was the 110th season of top-level professional rugby league held in Britain, and the ninth championship decided by Super League. The season culminated in the grand final between Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls, which Leeds won, claiming the 2004 title. Season summary During this season Leeds claimed a couple of records, they became the 1st team until Castleford in 2017 to accumulate 50 points from the regular rounds and finished a record 9 points clear of 2nd placed Bradford Bulls, they also became only the 2nd team in the Super League era to finish at home with a 100% record in the regular weekly rounds. Super League XIX
The 2014 Super League season (known as the First Utility Super League XIX due to sponsorship by First Utility) was the 19th season of rugby league football since the Super League format was introduced in 1996. Fourteen teams competed for the League Leaders' Shield over 27 rounds (including the Magic Weekend in Manchester), after which the highest finishing teams will enter the play-offs to compete for a place in the Grand Final and a chance to win the championship and the Super League Trophy. Teams Super League XIX will be the third and final year of a licensed Super League. Under this system, promotion and relegation between Super League and Championship was abolished, and 14 teams were granted licences subject to certain criteria.
