Indiana was admitted to the Union on December 11, 1816. Since then, the state has been represented in the United States Senate by 44 different men in Class 1 and 3; David Turpie served non-consecutive terms in Class 1, Dan Coats served non-consecutive terms in Class 3, and William E. Jenner served in both Classes. Until the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1913, Senators were elected by the Indiana General Assembly; after that, they were elected popularly by Indiana citizens. A senatorial term lasts six years beginning on January 3. In case of a vacancy, the Governor of Indiana has the duty to appoint a new U.S. senator. Todd Christopher Young (born August 24, 1972) is an American attorney and politician serving as the senior United States senator for Indiana, a seat he has held since 2017. A member of the Republican Party, Young previously served as the U.S. representative for . He was elected to the United States Senate in the November 8, 2016, general election, succeeding retiring Republican Dan Coats. From 2019 to 2021, he served as the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Young was reelected in 2022. National Republican Party
The National Republican Party, also known as the Anti-Jacksonian Party or simply Republicans, was a political party in the United States that evolved from a conservative-leaning faction of the Democratic-Republican Party that supported John Quincy Adams in the 1824 presidential election. Known initially as "Adams-Clay Republicans" in the wake of the 1824 campaign, Adams's political allies in Congress and at the state-level were referred to as "Adams's Men" during his presidency (1825–1829). Waller Taylor
Waller Taylor (c. 1775August 26, 1826) was an American military commander, politician, and one of the first two senators from the state of Indiana. Biography Taylor was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia where he spent his entire childhood. He studied law and served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1800 to 1802. In 1804 he moved to Vincennes, Indiana and practiced law there. He was appointed chancellor of the Indiana Territory in 1807. Also in 1807, he became a major in the territorial militia. He fought against Native Americans and served as an aide-de-camp to William Henry Harrison during the Tecumseh's War in 1809 to 1810. He participated in the Battle of Tippecanoe. Taylor continued in the United States Army during the War of 1812 and rose to the rank of adjutant general. James Noble (senator)
James Noble (December 16, 1785 – February 26, 1831) was the first U.S. Senator from the U.S. state of Indiana. Noble was born near Berryville, Virginia and moved with his parents to Campbell County, Kentucky when he was 10. There he studied law and he became an attorney, after which he moved to Indiana and settled in Brookville around 1808. Once settled in Indiana he became a ferryboat operator, a judge and a member of the state's first constitutional convention, in 1816, as a delegate from Franklin County. He was elected to the first session of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1816. He was elected as a Crawford faction Democratic Republican (later an anti-Jacksonian Democrat) to the United States Senate in 1816. He was reelected to two more terms and served from December 11, 1816, until his death in 1831. The 2028 United States Senate elections will be held on November 7, 2028, with 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate being contested in regular elections, the winners of which will serve six-year terms in the United States Congress from January 3, 2029, to January 3, 2035.
