Altgeld Gardens Homes (Chicago, Illinois)
Altgeld Gardens Homes is a Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) public housing project on the far south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States, on the border of Chicago and Riverdale, Illinois. The residents are 97% African-American according to the 2000 United States Census. Built between 1944 and 1945 with 1,498 units, the development consists primarily of two-story row houses spread over . History Altgeld Gardens was built by the Department of Housing and Urban Development to satisfy the need for improved housing for African American veterans returning from World War II. In 1956, the project was transferred to the Chicago Housing Authority. Located in an industrial area on Chicago's far South side, Altgeld was named after John Peter Altgeld, an Illinois governor in the 1890s. 87th Station
87th is an 'L' station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Red Line. The station is located in the median of the Dan Ryan Expressway and serves the Chatham neighborhood. There are two entrances to the station, one on the south side of the 87th Street overpass which served as the only entrance from 1969 until 2006 and one on the north side of the overpass which was opened as part of the Dan Ryan Red Line Rehabilitation Project. Lincolnwood Town Center is a shopping mall located in Lincolnwood, Illinois. Opened in 1990, the mall's anchor stores are Kohl's, TheRoomPlace, and Old Navy. The mall is owned and managed by Friedman Real Estate. History The site of Lincolnwood Town Center was formerly occupied by the headquarters of Bell & Howell. Developers Melvin Simon & Associates (now known as Simon Property Group and Chicago-based Hawthorn Realty first proposed to build a mall on the site in 1985, but the plan was turned down by city trustees. A second plan, calling for a smaller shopping mall and offices, was approved in 1987. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is a natural history museum located in Chicago, Illinois, and operated by the Chicago Academy of Sciences. Park Ridge is one of two commuter railroad stations on Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line in the city of Park Ridge, Illinois. It is officially located at 100 South Summit Avenue, and lies from the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Park Ridge is in zone C. , Park Ridge is the 33rd busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 1,168 weekday boardings. As of April 25, 2022, Park Ridge is served by 22 trains in each direction on weekdays, by 16 inbound trains and 15 outbound trains on Saturdays, and by nine inbound trains and 10 outbound trains on Sundays. Cicero Station (CTA Blue Line)
Cicero is a station on the 'L' system, serving the Blue Line's Forest Park branch. It is located in the median of the Eisenhower Expressway and serving the Austin neighborhood. Originally, Cicero had an additional entrance at Lavergne Avenue, but this was closed on May 16, 1977, by the CTA as a cost-cutting measure. The structure for this exit still stands but it is closed to the public. This is the last station on the Forest Park branch within the Chicago city limits. Ford City Mall is a shopping center located on the Southwest Side of Chicago in the West Lawn neighborhood at 76th Street and Cicero Avenue. Opened in 1965, Ford City is the largest enclosed mall in Chicago outside of downtown. Anchored by JCPenney, the mall contains more than 135 stores and restaurants including Applebee’s, Bath & Body Works, The Children’s Place, Foot Locker, Zales Jewelers, Marshalls, Old Navy, Victoria’s Secret/PINK, and Ross Dress for Less. Westfield Old Orchard, formerly Old Orchard Shopping Center, is an upscale shopping mall in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located in Skokie, Illinois. Anchor stores include Nordstrom and Macy's. History Westfield Old Orchard opened in October 1956 with Marshall Field and Company, Saks Fifth Avenue, and The Fair Department Store. Fair was renamed to Montgomery Ward in 1964. Two parking structures, the North and West Garages, were built in 1978.
