''Kota santri'' ("city of santri" or "city of pious people") is an epithet used in Indonesia, predominantly in Java, given to a region historically important in the context of Islamic education. The term ''santri'' generally means a Muslim student who studies at ''pesantren'', an Islamic boarding school indigenous to the Indonesian archipelago. In Indonesia, ''santri'' is a term for someone who follows Islam, Islamic religious education in ''pesantren'' (Islamic Boarding school, boarding schools). Santri usually stay in the place until their education is complete. After completing their study period, some of them will serve the ''pesantren'' by becoming administrators. According to C.C. Berg, the term "santri" comes from Sanskrit ''shastri'' which means "one who learns Hindu texts, Hindu scriptures"; it has the same root as the word ''shastra'' (literature). Starting in 2015, October 22 is designated as the National Santri Day (''Hari Santri Nasional'') in Indonesia. The Hajj (; ar, حَجّ '; sometimes also spelled Hadj, Hadji or Haj in English) is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest city for Muslims. Maulana Malik Ibrahim
Malik Ibrahim (died 7 April 1419), also known as Sunan Gresik or Kakek Bantal, was the first of the Wali Songo, the nine men generally thought to have introduced Islam to Java. Biography Ibrahim's origin is unclear, although it is generally agreed that he originated from outside of Java. He is thought to have been born in the first half of the 14th century. Ibrahim is known by several names in the ''Babad Tanah Jawi'' and other texts. In a transcription by J. J. Meinsma, he is identified as Makhdum Ibrahim as-Samarqandy (localised to Syekh Ibrahim Asmarakandi); this indicates a possible origin from Samarkand in modern-day Uzbekistan. However, other sources suggested that Asmarakandi came in the 16th century and is buried in Tuban Regency, making him a different person. Sunan Giri (also called Raden Paku or Joko Samudro), Muhammad Ainul Yakin (born 1442 CE in Blambangan (now Banyuwangi) is considered one of the Wali Sanga (revered saints of Islam) of Indonesia. Gresik Regency
Gresik Regency ( older spelling: Grissee, ) is a regency within East Java Province of Indonesia. As well as a large part of the Surabaya northern and western suburbs, it includes the offshore Bawean Island, some 125 km to the north of Java and Madura.
