Kortebaanschaatsen
Kortebaanschaatsen (short track skating) refers to an old form of Dutch ice skating tournament that goes back to the 18th century. It is not to be confused with the modern speed skating sport known as short track speed skating. The sport is similar to harness racing (known as kortebaandraverijen) and is similarly setup in two straight lanes of 160 meters. History Since 1805 women's kortebaanschaatsen is held over a distance of 140 meters. In the first race held for women in 1805 in Leeuwarden won by Trijntje Pieters Westra, the women were "just as fast as the horses", which referred to a previous kortebaandraverij that had been held previously that week with sleighs instead of wheeled sulkys. Speed Skating
Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors racing, race each other in travelling a certain distance on Ice skate, skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while short-track speed skating is known as "short track". The International Skating Union (ISU), the governing body of competitive ice sports, refers to long track as "speed skating" and short track as "short track skating". An international federation was founded in 1892, the first for any winter sport. The sport enjoys large popularity in the Netherlands, Norway and South Korea. KNSB Dutch Super Sprint Championships
The Dutch Super Sprint Championships of speed skating, organised by the KNSB, is the official Dutch championship to determine the Dutch Super Sprint champion. The Sprint distance championships date back to 1991 for men and 1992 for women. Usually two distances are skated twice, the 100m and the 300m. Janna Van Der Meulen
Janna (Kannada : ಮಹಾಕವಿ ಜನ್ನ) was one of the well-known Kannada poets of the early 13th century who also served in the capacity of a minister and a builder of temples. He graced the court of Hoysala empire King Veera Ballala II and earned the title ''Kavichakravarthi'' ("Emperor among poets"). His noteworthy writings include ''Yashodhara Charitre'' (c.1209) which deals with Jain tenets, ''Ananthnatha Purana'' (c.1230) which deals with the teachings of the 14th Jain tirthankara, Anantanatha and a short piece called ''Anubhava Mukura''. Tietje Spannenburg-Pagels
Tietje Spannenburg-Pagels (born 2 June 1906) was a Dutch kortebaan speed skater. Spannenburg-Pagels was born in Hallum. She later lived in Wommels. Between 1917 and 1933 she won a total of 56 prizes. Next to money prizes and two medals she also won a spoon, watch and a painting. The first prize she won was when she was eleven years old, and she finished second in a boys-and-girls competition in IJlst on 12 Februari 1917. Her partner in this competition was E. de Groot, also from Wommels. She won her last prize in Marrum on 30 January 1933, the last race of the winter of 1932-33 because the ice thawed. Most of the races she rode together with Jouke de Groot from Jorwerd. When he was ill, she competed several competitions in December with O. Bijlsma from Eernewoude. D. Volbeda wrote a poem in Frisian about Pagels and Jouke de Groot. Her brother Romke was also a kortebaan speed skater. He won a 14–15 years competition in Heerenveen in 1926. Martha Hemminga
Martha (Hebrew: מָרְתָא) is a biblical figure described in the Gospels of Luke and John. Together with her siblings Lazarus and Mary of Bethany, she is described as living in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She was witness to Jesus resurrecting her brother, Lazarus.
