KkStB Class 112
The kkStB 112 was a class of express train 2-2-2 tank engine operated by the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways (''kaiserlich-königliche österreichische Staatsbahnen'' or ''kkStB''). In order for the kkStB to provide a fast feeder service to express train stations, a requirement arose for small, fast locomotives. Karl Gölsdorf designed Class 112 for this purpose. The compound locomotive engines were well built, enabled a top speed of to be attained for short periods of time and could haul 100 tonnes continuously at . On their deliver in 1907 by Krauss in Linz the two engines were fitted with a small smokebox superheater, that was later removed. The small locomotives were initially used to haul newspaper trains between Vienna and Linz. Later they hauled the shuttle (''Pendler'') between Hütteldorf and Unterpurkersdorf, a connecting line to the Vienna Stadtbahn, where they were marshalled in the centre of the train. The Vienna Stadtbahn (german: Wiener Stadtbahn) was a rail-based public transportation system operated under this name from 1898 until 1989. Today, the Vienna U-Bahn lines U4 and U6 and the Vienna S-Bahn (commuter rail) run on its former lines. The Stadtbahn is one of Vienna's better-known examples of early Art Nouveau architecture. Its most famous buildings are the two former station entrances on Karlsplatz, now used as a café and a museum respectively, and the ''Hofpavillon'', a station built specifically for Emperor Franz Joseph, located at the eastern end of Hietzing station. Hütteldorf (; Central Bavarian: ''Hittldorf'') is a part of Vienna's 14th district, Penzing. Superheated steam is used in steam turbines for electricity generation, steam engines, and in processes such as steam reforming.
