Khauk Swè Thoke
Khauk swè thoke ( my, ခေါက်ဆွဲသုပ်; ; ) is an ''a thoke'' salad dish in Burmese cuisine. A wheat noodle salad, it is made with dried shrimp, shredded cabbage, carrots, fish sauce, lime and dressed with fried peanut oil. After World War II, over 300,000 ethnic Indians in Burma, including Tamils from Tamil Nadu, Telugus from Andhra Pradesh and Marwaris from the Marwar region of India's Rajasthan, immigrated to India. After returning to India, they brought their food culture also along with them. In Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, migrants sell khauk swe, which is commonly eaten in the area called Burma Colony. In Chennai, India, a version of the dish, called atho (from my, အသုပ်), is sold by street vendors. Panthays () form a group of Chinese Muslims in Burma. Some people refer to Panthays as the oldest group of Muslims in Burma. The exact proportion of the Chinese Muslim group in the local Chinese population remains unknown due to a lack of data. However, they are concentrated particularly in the northern part of Burma which is historically closer to China's Yunnan province where Panthays originated. Etymology ''Panthay'' (; zh, 潘泰) is a term used to refer to the predominantly Muslim Hui people of China who migrated to Burma. They are among the largest groups of Burmese Chinese, and predominantly reside in the northern regions of Burma (formerly known as Upper Burma), particularly in the Tangyan-Maymyo-Mandalay-Taunggyi area and Shan States. The name ''Panthay'' is a Burmese word, which is said to be identical with the Shan word ''Pang hse''.
