Izzy Einstein And Moe Smith
Isidor "Izzy" Einstein (1880–1938) and Moe W. Smith (1887–1960) were United States federal police officers, agents of the U.S. Prohibition Unit, who achieved the most arrests and convictions during the first years of the alcohol prohibition era (1920–1925). They were known nationally for successfully shutting down illegal speakeasies and for using disguises in their work. They made 4,932 arrests. In late 1925, Izzy and Moe were laid off in a reorganization of the bureau of enforcement. A report in ''Time'' magazine suggested they had attracted more publicity than wanted by the new political appointee heading the bureau, although the press and public loved the team. Isadore "Corporal Izzy" Schwartz (July 23, 1900 – July 8, 1988) was an American boxer, who became recognized as the New York Boxing Commission's World Flyweight Champion from 1927 to 1929. His manager was Phil Bernstein. He was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Though never having much of a knockout punch, in 115 professional bouts between 1922 and 1929, he scored 15 knockouts, 50 decisions, 12 draws, 8 no-decisions, and lost only 28 times. Israel Harold "Izzy" Asper (August 11, 1932– October 7, 2003) was a Canadian tax lawyer and media magnate. He was the founder and owner of the now-defunct TV and media company CanWest Global Communications Corp and father to its former CEO and President Leonard Asper, former director and corporate secretary Gail Asper, as well as former Executive Vice President David Asper. Isadore Gomez (died June 21, 1944, in Alameda, California, at the age of 68) was a Portuguese immigrant, chef and restaurateur in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco, California. In 1943, he was recognized by ''LIFE'' magazine as one of San Francisco's more colorful characters. Gomez left his home in Portugal when he was 18 and made his way to San Francisco. According to his obituary, he arrived in the city penniless, and "friends said his unrecorded charities had kept him that way". He landed his first job as a "swamper" in a local gin-joint on the infamous Barbary Coast. He managed to save enough to buy a small bar at 848 Pacific Avenue. Isidore Goldstein (June 6, 1908 – September 24, 1993) was an American baseball player. A native of Odessa who grew up in The Bronx, he was a right-handed pitcher who played seven years in professional baseball from 1928 to 1934, including 16 games in Major League Baseball with the 1932 Detroit Tigers. He compiled a 3–2 record and 4.47 in his 16 major league games. Israel Crisóstomo "Izzy" Alcántara (born May 6, 1971) is a former Major League Baseball player for the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers. Minor leagues Alcántara was signed as an amateur free agent by the Montreal Expos in 1990. In the minor leagues, Alcantara was very successful, with at least 27 home runs and an OPS of .940 or higher in each of his seasons from 1997 to 2001. Isidoro León Becerra (January 4, 1911 – July 25, 2002) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1945. The 34-year-old rookie was a native of Cruces, Cuba. León is one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II. He made his major league debut on June 21, 1945 in a home game against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Shibe Park.
