Inhalation Sedation
Inhalation sedation is a form of conscious sedation where an inhaled drug should: # Depress the central nervous system (CNS) to an extent that surgeons can operate with minimal physiological and psychological stress to the patient # Modify the patient's state of mind such that communication is maintained and the patient can respond to verbal command # Carry a margin of safety wide enough to render the unintended loss of consciousness and loss of protective reflexes unlikely. Nitrous Oxide (medication)
Nitrous oxide, is an inhaled gas used as a pain medication and together with other medications for anesthesia. Common uses include during childbirth, following trauma, and as part of end-of-life care. Onset of effect is typically within half a minute, and the effect lasts for about a minute. There are few side effects, other than vomiting, with short-term use. With long-term use anemia or numbness may occur. It should always be given with at least 21% oxygen. It is not recommended in people with a bowel obstruction or pneumothorax. Use in the early part of pregnancy is not recommended. It is possible to continue breastfeeding following use. Nitrous oxide was discovered between 1772 and 1793 and used for anesthesia in 1844. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Henry Hill Hickman (27 January 1800 – 2 April 1830) was an English physician and promoter of anaesthesia. Gardner Quincy Colton
Gardner Quincy Colton (February 7, 1814, Georgia, Vermont – August 10, 1898, Geneva, Switzerland) was an American showman, medicine man, lecturer, and former medical student who pioneered the use of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, in dentistry. After making $535 from his first public demonstration of nitrous oxide, Colton left medical school to travel the country giving lectures and presentations. Horace Wells
Horace Wells (January 21, 1815 – January 24, 1848) was an American dentist who pioneered the use of anesthesia in dentistry, specifically the use of nitrous oxide (or laughing gas). Early life Wells was the first of three children of Horace and Betsy Heath Wells, born on January 21, 1815 in Hartford, Vermont. His parents were well-educated and affluent land owners, which allowed him to attend private schools in New Hampshire and Amherst, Massachusetts. Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet, (17 December 177829 May 1829) was a British chemist and inventor who invented the Davy lamp and a very early form of arc lamp. Joseph Priestley
Joseph Priestley (; 24 March 1733 – 6 February 1804) was an English chemist, natural philosopher, separatist theologian, grammarian, multi-subject educator, and liberal political theorist.
