Sydney
Sydney ( ) is the capital city of the state of New South Wales, and the most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Victor Ramos (boxer)
Victor Ramos (born 14 April 1970) is a retired East Timorese boxer. He was one of the first athletes to represent East Timor at the Olympic Games, when he competed at the Men's lightweight Boxing event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, though he technically competed as an individual athlete because East Timor was newly independent and had not yet been formally recognized by the International Olympic Committee. He was also the flag bearer for the Independent Olympians at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Ramos was one of the ten East Timorese athletes who received training in Darwin prior to his participation in the Sydney Olympic Games. However, he lost in round 1 against Ghanaian boxer Raymond Narh and did not advance any further. The men's 56 kilograms weightlifting event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia took place at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 16. Total score was the sum of the lifter's best result in each of the snatch and the clean and jerk, with three lifts allowed for each lift. Martinho De Araújo
Martinho de Araújo, born 26 July 1973 in Dili, is an East Timorese weightlifter. He was one of the first sportspeople to represent East Timor at the Olympic Games, when he took part in weightlifting events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. A resident of Dili, he fled his home in 1999 after East Timor's declaration of independence from Indonesia, and the ensuing violence. He subsequently returned to find that his weightlifting training equipment had been stolen or rendered unusable in looting and arson. In order to continue training, de Araújo "improvised with metal rods stuck into paint cans that had been filled with cement." In Sydney, he lifted 67.5 kg in the snatch and 90 kg in the clean and jerk, finishing last. Raymond Akwete "Ray" Narh (born 21 July 1978) is a Ghanaian former professional boxer who competed from 2001 to 2014. He is a former WBC–USNBC light welterweight champion. As an amateur, Narh represented Ghana at the 2000 Olympics, reaching the second round of the lightweight bracket before losing to Andreas Kotelnik. Amateur career Narh was a gold medallist in the lightweight category at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. He was also a member of the 2000 Ghanaian Summer Olympic team and his cousin Ben Neequaye was also a member of the team. The men's lightweight boxing competition at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney was held from 17 September to 30 September at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. Competition format Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. The event consisted of 28 boxers of different nationalities, who had qualified for the competition through various qualifying tournaments held in 1999 and 2000. The competition began with a preliminary round on 17 September, where the number of competitors was reduced to 16, and concluded with the final on 30 September. Aguida (or Agueda) Amaral (born 27 May 1972) is an East Timorese athlete. She was one of the first athletes to represent East Timor at the Olympic Games, and the first woman to represent the nation, when she ran the marathon at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She technically competed as an individual athlete because East Timor was newly independent and had not yet been formally recognized by the International Olympic Committee. With a time of 3:10:55, she finished 43rd out of the 45 runners who completed the race, although eight other runners failed to finish. The men's marathon event at the 2000 Summer Olympics took place on 1 October 2000 in Sydney, Australia. One hundred athletes from 65 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Gezahegne Abera of Ethiopia, the nation's first victory in the event since winning three in a row from 1960 to 1968. Ethiopia's fourth gold medal in the men's marathon moved it out of a tie with France and the United States into sole possession of the most men's marathon gold medals. Ethiopia also became the first nation to have two medalists in the men's marathon in the same Games since South Africa did it in 1912, as Tesfaye Tola took bronze.
