ICraveTV
iCraveTV was a Canadian website, which operated from 1999 to 2000. The site offered streaming Internet broadcasts of the conventional television stations, both Canadian and American, that were available as over-the-air signals in Toronto. The site, launched by William Craig through his TVRadioNow Corporation in December 1999, was intensely controversial during its short lifespan, raising significant questions around the interpretation of copyright law. Craig viewed the service as essentially equivalent to a cable television distributor, while many of the television stations whose signals were being distributed, and the producers of programming airing on those stations, viewed the site's actions as analogous to the RIAA's copyright infringement case against Napster. William Craig (broadcaster)
William (Bill) Craig is a Canadian broadcaster. Craig began his career as a researcher for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's ''This Hour Has Seven Days''. He subsequently joined the programming departments at the CBC, TVOntario and Rogers Cable. He was also a policy analyst for the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in the 1970s. In the 1990s, Craig launched four regional sports networks in the United States. In 1999, he launched iCraveTV, a controversial website which offered streaming broadcasts of television stations. He shut down the website the following year after a copyright infringement lawsuit from the American broadcasters whose signals were available on the service. LocalBTV
LocalBTV is an American streaming television service based in Los Altos, California and owned by Didja. The service allows subscribers to view live and DVR recorded streams of over-the-air television as well as national channels on Internet-connected devices. Background Similar in concept to the defunct services Locast and Aereo, LocalBTV offers local channels via streaming. However, LocalBTV has indicated they will only carry local channels that permit them to do so, thus avoiding the legal issues Aereo had, and more recently, Locast. LocalBTV's target customers are viewers who cannot receive local antenna reception, or their cable, satellite, or streaming service does not carry the local broadcast channel they would like to watch. Aereo
Aereo was a technology company based in New York City that allowed subscribers to view live and time-shifted streams of over-the-air television on Internet-connected devices. The service opened to customers in March 2012, and was backed by Barry Diller's IAC. On June 25, 2014, the Supreme Court ruled against Aereo in a case brought by several broadcast networks. The Court found that Aereo infringed upon the rights of copyright holders. The point of contention was whether Aereo's business model constituted a "public performance", which would legally require it to obtain permission from the copyright owners of any programs it transmits. The court ruled in a 6–3 decision that Aereo's business model was no different from that of a cable television provider, despite the differences in technology. YTV is a Canadian English language specialty channel owned by YTV Canada, Inc., a subsidiary of Corus Entertainment. The channel and its programming is targeted at children and young teenagers; its name was originally thought to be an abbreviation for "Youth Television", though the channel's website has denied this. The channel was launched on September 1, 1988 by owners Rogers Media and CUC Broadcasting upon launch. In 1995, Shaw Communications acquired CUC's 34% stake and in 1998, it acquired Rogers' remaining interest of the channel, before Shaw's media division was spun off to form Corus Entertainment in 1999. Locast was an American non-profit streaming television service that allowed users to view live Streaming media, streams of Terrestrial television, over-the-air television stations. The service was founded by attorney David Goodfriend under the banner of the Sports Fans Coalition. Launched in New York City in January 2018, Locast expanded to media markets throughout the United States as well as Puerto Rico before suspending service on September 2, 2021 after an adverse decision by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York centering on copyright issues. Unlicensed broadcasting, also called pirate broadcasting is a term used for any type of broadcasting without a broadcast license. Some unlicensed broadcasting, such as certain low-power broadcasting, may be legal. For example, in the United States, Title 47 CFR Part 15 (or "part 15"), is a regulation that allows unlicensed broadcasting within a range of just a few meters. Matthew William Fraser (born July 3, 1958) is a British-Canadian academic, author and journalist.
